how much of a difference? well I don't remember the difference between Aluminum and Copper conductivity off hand, but it DOES help (look at Anandtech heatsink reviews, they are entirely trustworthy on their temperature measurements (to within a couple Degrees of course) compared to those reviews using the socket thermister, a very inaccurate way of measuring the tempurature of the core) that's for sure.

the difference as mentioned above probably amounts to 5°, though it varies from heatsink to heatsink, and you have to be sure you're talking about a review not run with a socket thermister.

Copper is a much better conductor of heat than aluminum. Most high end pots and pans will have a copper core, or be all copper completely. Many mid range pots and pans have a copper base. Why? Because copper distributes the heat more evenly than steal, or aluminum.

Check out this HS.

Alpha PAL 6035. Oldie but goodie. i got this on like 3 of my systems. they have it for a GREAT price here to 19.95 w/ very reasonable shipping.

Most overlooked HS on the market at the moment. Very nice tho. and quiet.

Aluminum is widely used as a heatsink for appliances, amplifiers, RC car engines, etc. I remember it having the right ratio of strength, weight, and heat dissipation to air. Not to mention it's price, abundance, and it's easy to work with.

Silver was one of the top performers but it's price is very high. Copper is a softer metal, harder to work with alone, but edged out aluminum with performance. Silver and other exotic metals arn't used too often because of their high costs.

So I guess neither, a Silver base would conduct more heat

I swear I remember reading somewhere that although copper conducts heat very well, it doesn't dissapate it to the air as easily as aluminium.

That would probably be why most coolers that work the best are pure aluminium, with a copper insert - the copper distributes heat to the aluminium very well - just not to air...
