After a fried of mine played around with usb drivers on a laptop thats running winnt 4.0 he gets an error on startup that says

service control manager
At leasr one service or driver failed to start on system startup.
use event viewer to view logs.

When looking at the logs I have 2 cmosa event id 22 entries.
After I click on the entries i get in the description
The event id 22 in source [cmosa] could not be found. It contains the following insertion strings, PC compatible EISA/Isa Hal,

So far from googling I havnt found an answer. I know that it does not have any viri on it. It does not have Dell Open Manage Client installed. It doesnt have an Service packs on it eahter. (Yeah I know but its not my laptop)

And right now im not sure that the cmosa problem is tied in with the error message that shows up but I do know that he got the cmosa and the error message right after he played with the drivers.

Ive uninstalled all drivers and reinstalled drivers but it hasnt fixed a thing yet.

If you need any system specs or any thing let me know.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, Thank you.

The USB drivers are probably still partially installed in nt. Using an uninistaller program to monitor the installation of the usb drivers may help to undo the damage. Are there really USB drivers for winnt 4, or was this just an attempt?

It was an attempt. I do not even know why he was trying to make usb work. He doesnt have any usb ports on the laptop.

i didn't think that nt4 was compatible with usb......

anyway - has your friend recently attempted, for any reason, to install MS's - BIOS3y2k patch?

otherwise, look in device manager - view devices by connection, and disable all references to USB.
make a note of what has been DISABLED, and see if that works.

Yes ive uninstalled the y2k patch. and ive cleaned up the registry.

I dont think that winnt has a device manager but Ive looked at devices in the control panel but I didnt find anything that looked like it had anything to do with the usb.
