Hi all

I just bought a CMV CT-726D (8ms) LCD monitor. The monitor so far seems ok, just one issue which i'm not sure if its normal for this model or just something wrong with the panel.

The top of screen seems darker than the bottom part of the screen. This is rectified by viewing it from a higher angle but the bottom is still slightly brighter than the top. Also, if i'm viewing a bright color like white, its only white where i'm focused on. The surrounding areas are a little yellowish. If i move my position about 10cm left i can see that the right side of the panel turns yellowish and vice versa.

This color changes are not very noticable when there are darker colors, but with white/light grey backgrounds its incredibly obvious and very iritating. So is this a problem with the panel or is it some setting i did not set properly? If so are there any troubleshooting steps i can take to sniff out the problem?

The monitor is connected via DVI to a geforce4 ti4200.

Thanks in advance.

That seems more or less typical for TN panels. It is not any problem with the drivers etc. but with the panel technology itself. TN panels have worse vertical viewing angles (i.e. the angle at which images can be viewed "normally") than horizontal viewing angles, because manufacturers have to align the crystals in one direction or another (vertically or horizontally), and people move more horizontally than vertically. This problem goes away if you use MVA or other non-TN (but more expensive) monitors.

If you're coming from the CRT world, see if you get used to it after a while. I don't really notice it on my laptop anymore (the viewing angle problem is a lot worse for laptops), so you might not notice it after a while.

Unfortunately, manufacturers exaggerate viewing angles to the point of being pretty much meaningless, since the advertised angle is more or less the angle at which "hey I can still notice there's something there" rather than "hey the screen looks funny" which happens around 10-20 degrees away from the center for most TN panels.

i see

still is it normal for the top and bottom to be in different shades of colour and the sides to be yellowish even when viewed directly from the front? I didn't quite notice it when i saw the demo unit in the shop, but when i got back viewing sites and white and light grey tones made it very noticeable.
