"The eBay Effect - Inside a Worldwide Obsession" is the latest production from the Peabody Award winning CNBC Documentary team and reporter David Faber. It's an unprecedented look at the eBay you don't know, with exclusive, behind-the-scenes access to the world's leading online commerce site.

An estimated 1.8 billion items, worth approximately $40 billion, are expected to be traded this year on this global electronic marketplace. If eBay employed the 430,000 people who earn an income selling on its site, it would be the nation's number two private sector employer. How did this company, just shy of its 10th birthday, change the fortunes of so many?

On the flip side, "The eBay Effect" also examines why some former users feel betrayed and have deserted the popular auction site. Faber delves into claims of fraud and outrage over fee increases and other controversies surrounding this juggernaut.

"The eBay Effect - Inside a Worldwide Obsession" premieres Wednesday, June 29th at 8 and 11 pm Eastern on CNBC.

WHY???

I've sold and bought plenty of things on eBay. Many things that I would never have been able to transact otherwise.

I sold one thing on ebay about 7-8 years ago. That is the extent of my ebay usage.

Exactly. eBay is a treasure trove of stuff you normally wouldn't be able to find to buy. If you aren't stupid and know what to look for, it's a very safe method of buying and selling items.

Hahahaha, holy sh1t, I've been watching it and the last segment just said that eBay asks its buyers/sellers to use PayPal to prevent fraud.

Exactly.

It's like the worlds biggest garage sale/flea market. I mean, duh.. but I guess some people just don't understand the beauty of that. It's an invaluble resource for people that regularly look for hard to find, unique, unusual, etc .. things.

It's also a good resource for regular things, too. You CAN find good deals. I almost always check eBay first, and then google. 9 out of 10 times(well, maybe 7 out of 10 nowdays..), eBay is either cheaper or the same as other online retailers. And dispite the people that overinflate shipping charges, there are those that don't.

I also find it depends on what you're looking for. Consumer electronics and things like that... pass. I don't really even bother. I do still check prices though.

I constantly use ebay, especially to check market prices for old, collectible stuff. Many, many times the "book" value is one thing (comics, fine pottery like Roseville, antique tools, old Coca-Cola collectibles, and on and on), but the actual market value is completely different and quite often much lower than the "book" value that is usually bandied about as the item's "true" value. After all, an item is only worth what someone will pay for it.

Ebay is good for guitars - unless you live in a large metro area, local stores dont have much choice, esp if you are looking for a used one. I just bought an Ibanez JPM4 from ebay for $800 and am very happy
