I wonder how he died, Most likely starvation but maybe not. He should of stayed in his car or near it. Also should of followed the road or go west. They said he was face down so maybe he was walking and fainted and died there. RIP

Most likely, drifted off to sleep - that's what happens when hypothermia strikes.

I was terrified to find out he didn't make it through. His great work on techtv and cnet was proof of his character.

I'm truly sorry for his family and friends...this is a terrible outcome to an already horrific week.

Okay, even though I felt really sorry that he died.. I cannot help thinking that he was an idiot for leaving his car... what did he expect to find in such a rugged and desolate terrain? Did he think there was going to be a restaurant or a mall "just arround the corner"? Just doesn't make sense to me... I would have at least stayed by the car and if possible tried to keep as warm as possible.. Yea, 20/20 is highsight.. but its pretty common sense.. it is the option with the highest chance of survival... maybe I'm just not seeing something here..

Remember that the family was already stranded for around 7 days when he decided to seek help. At that point, wouldn't you look for alternatives? 7 days is a long time...

Just read the CNN article but either I missed it or they didn't mention it but, how far was his body found from the car?

SIGH.... This is a huge huge loss for all of us, his peers, geeks, consumers and prosumers. For one, he provided a lot of us asian geeks with reassured motivation that even us asians can make it big in the tech/entertainment/TV worlds. And he also married a caucasion woman (and a very very strong woman at that).

Sigh, these are times where I wish to death that there is some form of an afterlife in any of our 10 dimensions, and that somehow, he knows that he will be missed, and that his family is still alive and healthy.

He did what he had to do in the face of desperation after a week of no help. He had only aabout a 10-15 mile hike back up the road to the denny's. It would've been one of the greatest stories of the year if he was found alive, but it wasn't so. Reality is hard.

May you Rest in Peace, and my deepest condolences to his beautiful family.

Just think, all of this might have been prevented if he only had a GPS... I personally wouldn't go anywhere desolate without a GPS... it's your eye in the sky, the one thing that assures you that you are on earth. You can determine how far you are from the nearest civilization or large road or address, and go in that direction, instead of aimlessly walking in a direction with no idea if the nearest civilization is 5 minutes or 5 DAYS away...

7 days is a long time... I would assume that I would be in no shape for hiking esp. if I did not have any food for a while. I would stay at the car and hope things get better.. if not, I would die by my car... The decision to hike or stay should have been made at the very beginning when people are stronger. Once the decision is made, people would have to stick to it...

Hindsight IS 20/20, but it just does not make sense.. "okay, we decided to say at our car... now it's the 7th day, I'm weak.. lets see if I can find someone hiking.. yea.. it looks desolate... yea, I probably wouldn't be able to get far.. but its still worth it..."" doesn't make sense to me...

Since he had lighters (according to CNN), make a big f'ing bonfire.. and hope the smoke gets seen...

ps. maybe its just me... and I'm just too rational.. people say I'm very logical and analytical... maybe James Kim just became less rational because of his circumstances... I just don't know...

When your family hasn't eaten for 7 days, and you see your kids slowly dying from starvation in front of you, you get desperate... Desperate times require desperate measures.

This desperate act caused his death and deprived his kids a father...

He probably suffered from hypothermia after a while... it's hard to make rational decisions after being in the cold so long. That really sucks for him and his family

It looks like 5 miles from the car. If the terrain was as dificult as they describe, then that could explain it. Also, I imagine that he was disoriented a bit. Perhaps the clues he left were not so much that poepel could find him; but that once he realized he was walking in circles for him to get back on track.

Very sad

Easy to say that now huh? Put yourself in James' shoes that Saturday morning when he decided to seek help. Stranded for 7 days. No food, no sign of help, kids and wife shaking in the cold, I mean there was a 7 month old baby there for crying out loud. Would you say the same thing if James was able to find help and rescue his family in time?

Yea, really logical and rational there! You don't fvcking think he thought of that in the freezing snow? When wood is wet, they don't burn ok? You wouldn't last 1 day out there.

What good would a GPS have done him? He knew where he was. Besides, have you ever tried to use one in old growth timber? Unfortunately, he made a terrible decision. That is very rugged country to be hiking in this time of year. Now, add in the fact that he had no clothes for winter hiking, no food, and hadn't eaten in a week. Leaving that car was a death sentence.

It's very sad.
