Unfortunately it seems that Onstar is a cellular network. In Oregon if you get more then 5 or 10 miles off of I5 cell service is spotty or nonexistant. They were lost in a very remote region, cell phones are useless. I would bet that you could even lose GPS reception in many of the canyons of So. Oregon.
It is my contentions that tech toys cost this man his life. The fatal route from Grants Pass to Gold Beach was plotted in both Google Maps and Microsoft Streets and Trips. This gives a whole new meaning to the term "killer Apps". If you are stranded anywhere in remote regions of the Western US all a GPS can do is tell you exactly where you are going to die.
I have lived my entire life in Oregon, over the years we have had hunters while lost, we have had hikers and mountian climbers die while lost or caught in winter storms, but in the last 2 years we have started seeing tursites lost and stranded on roads they should not have even known about. It now appears that internet maps may be the blame.
I have used these "killer aps" to locate businesses in distant citys and have noted that they usually gave me some bizarre route that I would not normally use. The message seems to be if you are using these "killer aps" to cross remote regions you need to use your head and avoid anything that is not a main Highway.
