CNN reported that the aircraft went through a sound barrier wall and guard rail on the airport perimiter.

Here's how it went:

Male reporter; ?By all accounts the airplane ran off the end of the runway, through the fence and through the sound barrier.? (The sound barrier he was referring to is an acoustical/sound barrier fence.)

Female reporter; ?The SOUND BARRIER, isn?t that really fast? Why were the pilots flying that fast on landing??

Male reporter; Long pause, then he explained the difference

This is a sad day for the family of the boy who died. May he rest in peace.

Simple misunderstanding? It's obvious what he meant when you read it, but maybe live TV makes you a little slower thinking on your feet...who knows.

Not too long ago I was watching CNBC and a commentator said,

"Will the new Harry Potter movie see a decline in sales due to it's NC-17 rating"

My g/f and I were perplexed for a while. mistake happen.

Acoustical Barrier - a baffle structure that suppresses the transmission of sound into the surrounding environment.

Coloquial = Sound Barrier, but not THE sound barrier, as in velocity.
