Yeah, just like CNN had an article about a month ago where they argued that doxxing was a form of assault. So basically they threatened to assault (by their own definition) the guy who made the clip retweeted by Trump.

That HanAssholeSolo guy is a piece of crap, but CNN dove right into the muck with him. They didn't do themselves any favors with this whole episode.

I couldn't agree more. CNN scored a few own-goals this week.

Ignore the right. And liberal useful idiots criticizing CNN to make themselves look "smart" (Will Oremus on Slate, German Lopez on Vox...) need to shut up and not engage in a circular firing squad. Now is not the time for equivocation.

Whatcha think, are these "new racist remarks" or "actually racist remarks"? (btw, not much 'investigation needed for this one)

"In May the user took part in a discussion, which appears to have been deleted, and described someone as a “the 'n' word” before asking: “Explain to me why a weekend doesn’t go by where 80 of you fucking moon crickets aren’t shooting each other down in Shitcago [Chicago]? Why you dumb fucking nignogs can’t attend a rap concert without someone being shot up?”

I'd buy that as actual racist comments, and I have no idea why someone would make such even believing they were anonymous. So even though I think the GIF is totally harmless (from what I've heard - haven't seen myself) and I find CNN's actions to be wholly inappropriate and chilling, I still get a bit of warmth that such a character was scared shitless.

No, it doesn't change my opinion. The guy is free to make a gif if he wants, he's free to his opinions, we can't shut down everything we don't like. This country is becoming more and more totalitarian and the push is coming from both sides (and of course both sides see themselves as the good guys).

If we threaten to doxx everyone in the internet who says something someone else thinks is bad or offensive the internet ceases to be a meetingplace for the exchange of ideas and will be nothing more than an echochamber where ideas and speech are silenced from fear of the repercussions.

Most on here are saying if you don't mean it don't post it, but if they were actually in a position where the anonymity they enjoy is going to be exposed I doubt they'd still think that. The repercussions from asking anonymous medical questions and now the insurance agency knows, women enjoying the internet without sexual harassment, people in more hostile countries expressing political opinions that could land them in trouble, or just a boss being a douche and not agreeing with you so you're fired.

Big slippery slope that we don't need to go down
Well said.

I didn't read all 11 pages so I may have missed this, but I was under the impression that a journalist wouldn't generally publish personal information unless there was a compelling public interest.

Is there a public interest in learning this guy's personal information? If so, why hasn't CNN published it yet? If not, why did they threaten to do so?
As far as CNN is concerned, the compelling public interest is to convince people that it isn't safe to make fun of CNN.

That backfired bigly.

Again, this was only because the President of the United States posted it and made it an Official Statement of the White House.

They don't actually give a shit about memes. To infer that from their actions is, at best, dishonest.

I very seriously doubt anyone outside of Minneapolis has even heard of the Guthrie Theater, let alone this play.

Seriously? You replied to Dawp's post about a production in Minneapolis to point out that you think this production is too obscure for anyone to have taken notice, but you totally ignored my post on the very next page where I linked to a conservative website actually reviewing a New York production of JC, which review acknowledges that the black Caeser in the play is clearly meant as a reference to Obama, but nonetheless gives the production a positive review, of course without expressing any outrage that it could be construed as advocating the assassination of Obama.

At first I thought it does seem below CNN's standards to go after such a character on a message board, but given the situation they are in (constantly under attack from the alt-right, GOP, Trump, and Trump supporters) they have little choice but to fight back hard.

Fox and other conservative outlets long ago threw away any scruples about attacking people to defend themselves, even MSNBC has engaged in this kind of behavior occasionally. It is unfair to hold CNN to some higher standard that no other news agency is held to. I approve of their actions, including their decision not to doxx the degenerate trump tard.

Sorry, I missed your post altogether. Apparently someone who lives in Brooklyn found time and reason to see a play in Minneapolis. Can't say that I'm surprised they were so accepting of Obama being assassinated, as The American Conservative is the flip side to CNN. But for the record, NO sitting politician should be depicted as assassinated.

Sure, but it's very common for Shakespeare's plays to be updated for modern audiences. I don't think that Trump and Obama are the only two who have been "Caesered."

Other theater historians say that past Caesars have been styled to resemble Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, Ronald Reagan and Abraham Lincoln.

If someone who actually attends a production of any Shakespeare play comes away from it thinking they should consider assassinating someone, I just don't know what to say about that. The most important point here, however, is that given the past history of other POTUSES being depicted as Caeser, there doesn't appear to be any sort of special conspiracy against Trump here, whether by Time-Warner or CNN as you have suggested. The outrage over it is rather phony.

I get the Kathy Griffin thing, but this one is a dud.

I think CNN wanted to find the source of the meme, given that Trump has tweeted stuff that originated from hate group sites. They found this asshole persona, who intrigued them, so they looked a little deeper, tried to contact the person behind the persona.

They found a guy who confessed to having a problem with trolling, kinda like a person who has an epiphany about being an alcoholic or an addict. They're all afflictions that make people do & say things they're not proud of once the truth hits home. I think it's a new form of compulsion beyond some people's ability to control. It's the anonymity that makes it possible, of course. It's the internet. You can say anything.

Not that CNN conveyed it very well but that's the real story here. It's an invitation for people to take a look at themselves.

its pretty common for thespian types when doing 'modern dress' versions of olden-days plays to make characters look a bit like whoever currently has a similar role in society. They do it all the time, and I don't think its justifiable to try and read into that any serious meaning. It's more likely to be 'this guy is the top dude, and this is what audiences currently think top dudes look like, so we'll do that'.

And seriously comparing Trump to Julius Caeasar would be far more an insult to the Roman than to the American.

I don't disagree one bit that this one is a dud, but my point was that the parent company of CNN is funding a play where every day, Donald Trump is brutally stabbed to death at the same time that CNN is claiming that a silly Internet meme of Trump body-slamming a CNN logo is literally an assault on Western civilization and a danger to their personnel.

Your refusal to include all of the context is defining you as a person.

lol CNN threatens a guy making a GIF they find embarrassing as "an invitation for people to take a look at themselves"?

With a reach like that, I certainly hope you played professional basketball.
