I believe his point is CNN basically said apologize or we'll expose you.
I realize this is an over simplification

I'm tapping out of this thread, CNN acted stupidly, that and everything else is just a stupid distraction from the important stuff.

Yes, that was my point, thank you.

It's just kind of hurting my brain that CNN went this far on this particular issue.

Given how irrational and grossly out of proportioned 'internet justice' can be I think the news organizations should take into consideration the potential blowback for the person who's information they post compared to that persons posted message\meme. I don't agree that 'post it, own it' means you should be prepared for a President and global news organization to put you in the middle of spat and subject you to the crazies online - unless there is a far better reason than this stupid gif

Yeah it's all a really gray and fuzzy line when it comes to opinions and how you present them. I'm pretty open about "owning your shit" and believe that if you make a statement you best be willing to accept the blowback or result of that. That happened to Kathy Griffin a few weeks ago. She made a statement and had to own the consequences. She paid with her job and a mountain of hatemail and death threats.

Things get blurry under the guise of internet. On Facebook you usually have your name associated with what you post. People get fired due to statements about their employer, in family feuds due to petty interactions on there, ect. It's all stuff you have to own. But when you come to sites like this or Reddit there is some honor among thieves..for lack of better term. The anonymity does provide some protection and freedom of expression. You are free to say stuff. I'm free to ignore you, roast you, debate you in civility, whatever. But there is (or was) a moral code that you leave it at that and don't go out and persecute the person behind the user name. That just isn't the moral code we really signed on for when joining an online community.

When news sites, spiteful politicians, ect start muddying the waters between real world and online communities they start digging in ways we didn't necessarily agree to. That barrier of anonymity is destroyed and people are exposed. It's not a practice I support and it should be appropriately admonished regardless of affiliation/partisanship/beliefs/ect.

When legitimate threats arise, then forum administrators should be contacted by the appropriate officials and it should be handled in a professional manner. This was not a threat, nor was it handled in a professional manner.

Wow. Some retard user made a retard meme with Trump on the internet. This is HUGE. HUUUUUGE.
Why is this not all over CNN? Oh wait.....

Edit: I am an admitted and proud (very proud ) liberal, progressive, semi-communist socialist bastard and I do indeed get most of my news from CNN. But this is is just fucking BS, very low by CNN. Makes them look like some whiny pussies....over a fucking reddit meme? Seriously...

That is correct. They "doxxed" (found his personal information) him privately with a threat of releasing his information publicly if he recanted his apology online at any time.

Last I checked doxing is specifically the release of the information.

You are right. Is there a term for privately doxxing somebody?

Also, technically, blackmail isn't the right word either, because the technical definition of blackmail is for money, not an apology.

It still is a form of blackmail/bullying and low brow behavior by a news site that wants to be seen as professional.

I don't know of one, because it's a whole lot rarer to get the information and not publish it, and the real transgression is putting that information out in front of the internet hate machine, which by the law of large numbers basically means you're exposing that person to death threats and attempts on their employment.

I wouldn't dispute that, they had other better options to get in touch.

I don't think I've ever even heard of it before, which is why I was so surprised that it was not only an article, but a front-page one at that. "We have this guy's information, but because he said sorry to us, we're not gonna release it". Seems so childish, especially over a photoshopped wrestling gif.

Internet hate machine is a good word for it. Man, people's lives get destroyed when news organizations do thoughtless actions. Remember that guy who had his old plumbing truck sold to ISIS? He started getting like 100 death threats a day. People were even contacting his kids, it was pretty awful.

Trump didn't care about any of that. His use of the GIF merely states his intentions wrt the Free Media in general. Beat the shit out of them. Make them submit to his Will.

Where did they threaten to release his public information if he recanted his apology online at any time?

Under certain circumstances a newspaper can legally publish the name and picture of a person, I'd say that if he persists with the whole "these are the Jews working for CNN" bullshit which may very well lead to a "pizzagate" incident then CNN would be within their legal right to publish his name when they sue him for incitement of violence.

What is the point of suppressing one guy to not create anymore memes of CNN? Wouldn't this entice more people to produce similar memes?

Also, if you read the apology, seems it was written with specific guidance or just written by CNN.

Actually it was issued BEFORE CNN contacted him. I'm guessing something tipped him off that the heat was on. He put it out. Reddit deleted it shortly after.

There is no evidence that CNN did more than try to contact him prior to his apology. He then called them & was interviewed.

Mindless trolling ignores the law of unintended consequences. It's a fucking disease of the mind.

For the the last time, CNN is not "free media" or a member of the free press. CNN lost their membership to those groups when it decided to collude with politicians to rig the election.

Maybe I'm misreading it, but from the CNN article:

http://www.cnn.com/2017/07/04/politics/kfile-reddit-user-trump-tweet/index.html

CNN is not publishing "HanA**holeSolo's" name because he is a private citizen who has issued an extensive statement of apology, showed his remorse by saying he has taken down all his offending posts, and because he said he is not going to repeat this ugly behavior on social media again. In addition, he said his statement could serve as an example to others not to do the same.

CNN reserves the right to publish his identity should any of that change.

It can certainly be read that way but legally CNN cannot post his identity just for a retraction of the apology. They can legally publish his identity if he persists with certain things like propagating against Jews and then name and post pictures of which members at CNN are Jews. I do think that passes the Brandenburg test but IANAL.

Yeah, I'm guessing either something or someone tipped him off or he realized the gravity of the situation he was in, issued the (surprisingly well-worded) apology, and now his account is deleted.

I wonder what the usage policy is on things like Facebook, where your real name is associated with the account, but privacy settings have advanced to the point where the media would basically have to socially engineer their way into your account. Do they have a TOS clause against that? I believe Reddit's TOS prohibit doxxing, but if CNN released the guy's information, then it's Reddit's lawyers vs. CNN's lawyers.
