It can certainly be read that way but legally CNN cannot post his identity just for a retraction of the apology. They can legally publish his identity if he persists with certain things like propagating against Jews and then name and post pictures of which members at CNN are Jews. I do think that passes the Brandenburg test but IANAL.

Yeah, but there are plenty of Internet hate groups to go after & dox online (I would assume most users don't use any kind of IP-hiding technologies when posting), why specifically pick on him, just because of an animated picture?

Yeah, I'm guessing either something or someone tipped him off or he realized the gravity of the situation he was in, issued the (surprisingly well-worded) apology, and now his account is deleted.

I wonder what the usage policy is on things like Facebook, where your real name is associated with the account, but privacy settings have advanced to the point where the media would basically have to socially engineer their way into your account. Do they have a TOS clause against that? I believe Reddit's TOS prohibit doxxing, but if CNN released the guy's information, then it's Reddit's lawyers vs. CNN's lawyers.

According to the article you linked earlier they just used the details he himself posted on Reddit to find his identity on Facebook.

If CNN does publish his identity illegally they'll have bigger things to worry about than Reddit or Facebook and their lawyers (who actually can do nothing about this since the guy provided the details himself).

You keep using the word "dox" which they have not done and will not do. Identifying him is not doxxing any more than if I find you on Facebook (through details you shared on other sites) and get your personal information.

As I said, it's not really spelled out what they meant but I'm assuming the guy knows exactly what they mean and that CNN aren't stupid enough to go ahead and illegally publish his name.

Again, it seems they became interested because of the number of things he posted about CNN including charts showing Jewish employees. That coupled with the other violent things he had posted might in itself seem simple but there are people out there (Pizza Gate, Colorado PP shooter etc...) who think it's their duty to act on it. They might not have taken kindly to having that kind of focus put upon them.

Idiotic. They should have either:
- ignored it
- made a witty response, perhaps something like "The rest of the video, not shown, is where we pinned Trump and his tiny hands" (except more witty)
- made a staid, rise-above-it response basically saying that this is expected from someone like Trump

Instead, they look like aholes and bullies, and to gain what exactly (?)

I'm curious exactly how they found his name, assuming he didn't link directly to his Facebook profile at some point (you never know). They have some really neat tricks for finding correlations to real names online these days. Remember Sabu's outing?

i don't see anything wrong with the gif itself, but he was stupid enough to take credit and be connected with a bunch of racist/antisemitic shit. to me that 'incitement to violence' claim is BS, CNN is not a 'journalist' - only if he pasted a individual reporters face on there.

their statement should have ended here
CNN is not publishing "HanA**holeSolo's" name because he is a private citizen
but adding this sounds like a threat
who has issued an extensive statement of apology, showed his remorse by saying he has taken down all his offending posts, and because he said he is not going to repeat this ugly behavior on social media again.
CNN could have let this blow over quietly.

I think that it caught their attention and that they then noted the posts against Jews and finally the Image of all who are Jews and work at CNN along with their names.

Given how posts like that have inspired acts of violence in the past it's fairly reasonable to be concerned about that.

From the article you posted earlier: "KFile was able to determine key biographical details, to find the man's name using a Facebook search and ultimately corroborate details he had made available on Reddit."

I have no idea who or what Sabu is or how it is in any way related to this.

Yes, I meant the details of that process.

He was the leader of a hacking group called LulzSec (similar to Anonymous). He was outed in a similar way, digging through details online to ultimately figure out who he was, even though he hadn't posted his name, address, or other personal contact information publicly.

So now CNN has outed the guy?

Come on, stick with reality instead of making up what has happened.

Also "FYI "HanAssholeSolo" just called me."I am in total agreement with your statement. I was not threatened in anyway."" - https://twitter.com/KFILE/status/882429541981052928

Hmm:

After posting his apology, "HanA**holeSolo" called CNN's KFile and confirmed his identity. In the interview, "HanA**holeSolo" sounded nervous about his identity being revealed and asked to not be named out of fear for his personal safety and for the public embarrassment it would bring to him and his family.

Read the twitter feed, apparently he called Andrew again to say that he was not threatened by the statement they made.

I think he knows more than we do but perhaps we should go full conspiracy and just assume that what BOTH sides are saying are lies?

Again, I don't know what the word for private doxxing is. Sabu was publicly doxxed. This guy was, for lack of a better term, privately doxxed. We can get hung up on semantics if you want, but that's not the point of this thread. The point is that it's weird that CNN is holding exposing his information over his head.

I would feel a little threatened if CNN said on their homepage that they reserved the right to reveal my personal information if I didn't comply with their wishes, wouldn't you?

So he can't be concerned about his own actions catching up to him without someone threatening him? He knew he was being found out. It's a logical conclusion to be afraid it would get out. Doesn't mean anyone threatened to do it.

This doesn't constitute that?

CNN reserves the right to publish his identity should any of that change.

He was threatened with a public doxxing if he didn't submit to what CNN wanted. If the guy was doing something illegal or potentially threatening, take it to the police. CNN took this way too far and damaged their journalistic and corporate integrity with this.

At face value, sure, but...'a global billion-dollar media company said they reserved the right to publish my name should any of my statements change'.

It's kind of like revealing identity of a clansman who does racist stuff in a mask. Fair ball.

I bet the guy cried like a little bitch when CNN called him to confirm the story and they felt sorry for him. They are too soft. No way Fox News would have held back.
