Making "silly" antisemitic caricatures was par for the course in Europe in early 20th century. CNN is putting trolls on notice. You are allowed to attack our free press, but you aren't entitled to anonymity when doing so.

I was referring to the gif in question (the wrestling one, per the OP), not the user's post history on reddit (which was not an animated graphic).

What specific great things have resulted from Internet anonymity?

Please note that I'm not arguing that anonymity should be removed from the Internet, I simply take issue with claims of anonymity making the Internet "great". With regard to intellectual discourse, the Internet would be a far safer and more productive place for most discussions if anonymity wasn't possible IMO. I agree with WB, on most topics if one has something useful to say, then one should have no issue with their real identity being associated with those comments.

On the flipside, if Internet anonymity was a requirement of posting stuff online, what would shitposters like Donald Trump do with themselves? They'd be indistiguishable from an anti-social teen with an attitude problem.

How about someone arguing for a woman's right to an abortion on an internet forum and those who have opposite views are able to find out they work for planned parenthood because their real identity is next to the comments, now that person has to watch their backs and continuously put up with death threats and being called baby killer,

How about an atheist who calls out someones religious beliefs and makes them look like a fool on line now receives death threats against themselves and family because he skewered someones sacred cow.

Or even more mundane than that, you might have activities or political beliefs that even though may not have anything to do with work might not by looked at kindly by upper management and the only thing that protects you from them is a pseudonym,

and let's not forget the reality that allows a women to be taken more seriously on most male dominated message boards because she doesn't post under her real name signifying that she is a female.

And that's an embarrassment to our country and an assault on our free press but in no way excuses CNN basically committing extortion on the guy.

Trolls are the Real Victims. And the Precious, the Donald.

His actions aren't an embarrassment but rather a threat to Democracy just as his Presidency is a perversion of it.

CNN's official statement:

1. CNN will not be publishing his name
2. CNN did not blackmail or coerce the user
3. The user is an adult male, not a minor
4. The user apologized & deleted his account before speaking with CNN's reporter

Still:

1. CNN dug up a user's information (from an "anonymous" account on reddit)
2. Over a silly gif
3. And published it as front-page news

What about it? He posted it. It depicts physical violence against CNN.

Putin luvs him some Donald.

Honestly I believe that the Russian government has a decent understanding of how to psychologically manipulate the sort of people who make Donald's most fervent fans and have been helping him keep their support because it weakens the US.

Putin is a good man, and thorough.

I look forward to the RT interview of the T_D moderator. Should be 'illuminating'.

Insane. This country has lost its mind. The president. The press. The populace.
This. Meanwhile, CNN's parent organization, Time Warner, continues to sponsor "Shakespeare in the Park" where Donald Trump is assassinated every night. 'Cause reasons.

On the plus side, CNN is much funnier than any sitcoms the networks produce, so at least this four years isn't a total loss.

They're trying to deter others from engaging in similar behavior. It's not like they'll ever actually release his information. He could call their bluff and there's no chance they'll do it.
What are they trying to deter others from doing? Making internet memes?

Interesting. I am not sure how I feel about this. On one hand people use the anonymity of the Internet to do some very crazy things under impression that there are no consequences. On the other hand, the guy didn't sign up for our idiot president making him a national story.
CNN could easily have grinned and took it just like both sides are demanding Trump do. Trump didn't make this guy a national story, it was CNN's corporate blackmail that did that. Trump made his meme a national story, not him.

Kathy Griffin depicted physical violence against Trump yet no rational person thought she was actually calling for violence against him.

They obviously know how to twiddle the minds of the Bernie bros, as well. Crooked Hillary! What is she hiding?! Wall St speeches! Poor Bernie! So cheated!

We're becoming a nation of chumps.

Their competent legal and pr departments are very busy this morning.

She did it publicly and where is her career now? Trump supporters seem to think that free speech means no consequences. But read the first Amendment, it's about the government, not CNN. There are no consequences from the government, not private sector. If anything POTUS tweeting a picture of himself slamming CNN is a violation of First Amendment since he is the head of government.

Yeh, it's CNN's fault that Trump posted a vid of him doing them violence. I mean, it's perfectly acceptable for the Prez to do that, right?

The troll who created it? Play stupid games, win stupid prizes. He nearly hit the jackpot.

CNN? They fired a shot across the bow of every Trump troll on the internet about abusing their trademark & inciting violence against the media.

why wasn't there outrage when another "Shakespeare in the Park" in Minneapolis did the same play with an Obama look-a-like as Caesar?

http://www.thedailybeast.com/the-da...pocrisy-over-trump-like-julius-caesar-outrage

As for Guilfoyle’s claim that liberals would go nuts if Obama was Caesar, well, during the 2012 season, the popular Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis indeed presented an Obama-inspired Julius Caesar—and Delta was a major sponsor. There was little to no liberal outrage over the production, and Delta continued to sponsor the acting troupe that put on the play.

a bit hypocritical if you ask me.

CNN is starting to understand a few things.
1. Trump supporters are watching Fox News anyways.
2. MSNBC is doing well with Trump opponents, who are tired with false moral equivalences of "objective" media.
3. The country is polarized, people want red meat, not oatmeal.
4. They are going to be attacked no matter what, so take some chances.
