Also, pointing this out specifically: His post history included an image listing everyone he thought was Jewish in CNN. The only good thing to be said at this point was that he used blue stars rather than gold.

Sure:

1. He posted a meme that could be depicted as advocating violence
...
5. He is a middle-aged adult male with a family
6. He had a post history of racist & other offensive material

He didn't want his real name getting out into the wild.

The highlighted point is why roflmouth & friends are particularly concerned.

LOL @ CNN. It's been a really good week for them.

You know when you are right you are right and this time you are right!

Trump's War With CNN Is Failing, New Ratings Say.

"Despite a high level of vitriol, President Trump's efforts to undermine CNN have failed so far, if the ratings are any indication.

The Turner Broadcasting news network reported its most-watched second quarteron June 27. Notably, Time Warner Inc.'s (TWX) CNN saw a 39% year-over-year spike in the important 25-54 demographic, pulling in 264,000 total day viewers -- second among the Big Three news channels that also include Fox News and MSNBC. In fact, the quarter represented CNN's best for adults aged 25-54 since the 2008 election cycle nearly a decade ago."

Trumps new moto - make CNN's ratings great again!

Yeah it's all a really gray and fuzzy line when it comes to opinions and how you present them. I'm pretty open about "owning your shit" and believe that if you make a statement you best be willing to accept the blowback or result of that. That happened to Kathy Griffin a few weeks ago. She made a statement and had to own the consequences. She paid with her job and a mountain of hatemail and death threats.

Things get blurry under the guise of internet. On Facebook you usually have your name associated with what you post. People get fired due to statements about their employer, in family feuds due to petty interactions on there, ect. It's all stuff you have to own. But when you come to sites like this or Reddit there is some honor among thieves..for lack of better term. The anonymity does provide some protection and freedom of expression. You are free to say stuff. I'm free to ignore you, roast you, debate you in civility, whatever. But there is (or was) a moral code that you leave it at that and don't go out and persecute the person behind the user name. That just isn't the moral code we really signed on for when joining an online community.

When news sites, spiteful politicians, ect start muddying the waters between real world and online communities they start digging in ways we didn't necessarily agree to. That barrier of anonymity is destroyed and people are exposed. It's not a practice I support and it should be appropriately admonished regardless of affiliation/partisanship/beliefs/ect.

When legitimate threats arise, then forum administrators should be contacted by the appropriate officials and it should be handled in a professional manner. This was not a threat, nor was it handled in a professional manner.
Agreed, and well said. On the other hand, apparently this dude made some racist remarks*, and it IS kinda nice to see someone like that suddenly face unmasking. It is still scary though to have CNN throw its weight against some nameless individual whose "crime" was making fun of CNN.

* Haven't investigated myself so I don't know if they were actually racist remarks or the new "racist remarks" such as "taxes are too high" or "college students shouldn't need safe spaces" or "I don't think cops actually decide to go murder some black people."

How about someone arguing for a woman's right to an abortion on an internet forum and those who have opposite views are able to find out they work for planned parenthood because their real identity is next to the comments, now that person has to watch their backs and continuously put up with death threats and being called baby killer,

How about an atheist who calls out someones religious beliefs and makes them look like a fool on line now receives death threats against themselves and family because he skewered someones sacred cow.

Or even more mundane than that, you might have activities or political beliefs that even though may not have anything to do with work might not by looked at kindly by upper management and the only thing that protects you from them is a pseudonym,

and let's not forget the reality that allows a women to be taken more seriously on most male dominated message boards because she doesn't post under her real name signifying that she is a female.

I like how every example you gave implies that terrible online behavior is practiced exclusively by the right targeting the left. Very convincing.

They have no idea what the fuck they're up against. They think "oh a bunch of neckbeards on social media, big whoop, that's not REAL NEWS (TM)."

They don't seem to understand how violent and unhinged these places, and the people in them, actually get. I really think someone at CNN will be hurt or killed, maybe several someones.

Oh boy CNN memes LOL wtf who wants CNN memes and why? They're a serious news organization that reports the news what's to make fun about? Also reddit can lick my tasty gonads, hate the layout.

Well actually there is one meme that would be funny with CNN. Everything with them is breaking news it seems.

If they weren't blatantly racist like highlighting jewish people who work there for obvious reasons, then online trumpsters wouldn't be so motivated to defend their own.

CNN is the least of this guy's problems. If CNN could find out who he is and that alone scared him from being a macho Trump trash into a little bitch, so can others who don't give a crap about niceties and legalities. He is at a high risk of actual blackmail.

CNN figured it out. Trump supporters don't watch them anyway. But liberals want a free press that's adversarial to Trump and Republicans. It is not rocket surgery.

No, I was really asking...I didn't see that in the CNN article. It just mentioned he had a family, didn't specify if he was a kid or married or what.

That may be mitigating circumstances but remember that the reporter which originally covered the story and traced it back to reddit had death threats against him. My understanding is that was when CNN decided to find out who was responsible. CNN could have revealed the name and personal information as a matter of course. Instead they showed restraint for not starting up crap again. Considering the resultant threats it may be that a lawsuit and public esposure would have resulted.

This guy got off light and I have no sympathy for him.

Not really surprising to see some people are ok with what CNN did. Just sad.

Funny how they all turn out to be sniveling little cowards once you get them out from behind the monitor...

That is funny. Kinda like on here, rarely anyone actually posts information about themselves. Plenty of opportunities, especially in the picture thread. I have posted many facts about myself. Wonder if people want news sites to out their names if they don't like what they said, and if you would still be ok with them doing that to you?

Do you believe you have a right to privacy?

Obviously that depends on the context, and how my ID would get taken. Not the best attempt at trolling. I asked an easy question to the poster.

Would you be ok with a news agency getting your ID by tracking the IP, then posting it? Because they didn't like what you said?

I believe in privacy and want it but if I were being an ass I would absolutely expect it to come back on me. Sure the how matters but the reality is this guy stands a good chance of being outed with or without CNN. It's one of the (minimal or unlikely) risks of participating online. Everyone knows it, this guy knows it. Truth is, if you don't put such nastiness out there you never have to worry about your behavior being held against you. Just a rule of thumb, Live with good morals, standards and intentions... more often than not that'll be enough.

How am I trolling by asking a question?

Sorry I wasn't more clear: do you think you have a Constitutionally protected right to privacy from the government?

To answer you question, I don't like a news agency doing that. Do you know one that does? I can think of one...

Fine then. My real name is Marissa van Eck, and I stand behind what I've said in here. Including, and especially, the parts where I tell people where to go and what to do when they get there.

You quoted me and diverted off my question to the other poster.

Again, that depends on the context. It was ruled that the government could not get into an iphone for a investigation. I work an a government site, I have absolutely zero right to privacy here. Your question is very open ended, and without exact context cannot be really answered. Which is why I called it a trolling post, and the other reason. Trying to lead me into a "gotcha", with a silly question.

Obviously I am talking about CNN. If you think holding over someone's head the threat (that they admit will result into actual real life personal threats against him) of releasing his name is ok just because he posted a meme about CNN that they didn't like is ok, then I don't agree with you. I am not surprised you think like that though. Except if it was Fox News in the exact same reversal.

Fine then. My real name is Marissa van Eck, and I stand behind what I've said in here. Including, and especially, the parts where I tell people where to go and what to do when they get there.

Good for you. I happen to like your name, anything with "van" in it just sounds cool to me. I have posted my name as well, and multiple pictures, city where I live, where I work, etc. The point I was making is that the vast majority of people here, say what they say because they hide behind anonymity. They do this without releasing any information about themselves. Hiding behind the monitor as you said. You say some very hateful things, very often. As do many around here. The other point is, would you be ok with a news agency outing who you are as their top story, what your name is, where you live, etc simply because they don't like some of the hateful things you've said? You don't think this is a problem?
