CNN Live Has A Report On Possible 1st Case Of Ebola Virus Found In North America

Just watching CNN live. Apparantly they have a patient in Ontario with the Ebola virus.

I think this is the virus which causes people to hemmorhage to death and was known for wiping out whole villages in Africa in the 1970's.

Luckily it's not spread through the air.

I think the level of concern will relate to whether the victim caught it in Africa, or if the source is unknown.

I went to Africa a few years ago and on the plane from London to Nairobi they showed the movie Outbreak. HEY! I didn't want to see that, you cruel airline people!

It only takes one person to start a pretty serious outbreak (from all the wonderful movies I've seen). Let's hope it is contained!

I didn't see it on the net. Was home sick watching cable and they broke in with a live report on CNN. They had several Ontario physician's on a panel talking about it. I believe the individual had been travelling in Africa and returned to Canada.

They specified that it was not an air-borne virus and could only be contracted through the exchange of bodily fluids.

Now they're back on Bush's tax plan. Not sure what's going on with that story now.

Doctors also said the woman, who just arrived from the Congo, could be suffering from a variety of illnesses including meningitis.

Odds are she got it there, hopefully they'll be able to contain it here.

I really wouldn't be surprised what diseases one could pick up in Africa. My sister was a Peace Corps volunteer in Cameroon, West Africa. Several in her group died of malaria their first year over. She got a couple of weird illnesses, one of which her hands swelled up and she couldn't feel her legs for about 3 days. They couldn't identify what that illness was. Her fiance went to visit her during her second year and contracted some type of problem with tiny worms embedding themselves in his face and he was only there for a couple of weeks.

The more people go into the jungles over there, it seems the more strange illnesses come out.

Luckily ebola only spreads through bodily fluids. Unless someone messes with her blood etc, and people mess with those peoples fluids, there won't be an outbreak. Only reason there were outbreaks in Africa, is they are very poor nations.

Ack!! I was watching 12 Monkeys last night and the thought did cross my mind about how something like that could happen... Ebola isn't as contagious as the virus in the movie, but it's still not anything to take lightly. I hope the person that has Ebola didn't drink from any public water fountains. :Q

Read The Hot Zone. It's about an outbreak of a new strain of Ebola in Reston, VA. A monkey-house in VA had a bunch of monkey dying suddenly. It was an airbore version of the Ebola virus that killed them, but luckily for us, it only attacks monkeys. For now. When you get right down to the nitty gritty, scientists can't tell the difference between Ebola Reston and Ebola [whichever strain is the most infectious, Zaire? If I was at home with my book I could look it up]. Wasn't it like 97%, 98% deadly? All it needs to do is mutate slightly, and we have an airbore Ebola on our hands. In the book it sounded like an Ebola flu.

Ebola isn't that scary, it has no airborne variant and kills so quickly that the contagous risk is very minimal. CDC also concluded that the Zimbabwe outbreak was due to improper hygene in the hospitals (resuse of needles and such). After CDC intervened in Zimbabwe and got the hospitals to use proper medical hygene the outbreak ended almost overnight. As long as Ebola doesn't mutate to an airborne strain it won't present a serious health threat in developed nations.
