CNN's Touchscreen Election Analysis Rig

Is anyone watching the Super Tuesday coverage on CNN? The touchscreen computer system that they are using to vizualize the election results is fascinating.

The newscaster can pan and zoom into different states, counties, even cities, and the election data is automatically displayed for that locality. He also has access to both parties data for the 2008, 2004, and 2000 primaries.

Absolutely a fascinating implementation and data design.

The first Surface products aren't due out until later this Spring, even after their release was moved up (just this past week); so I'm not quite sure what they're running over at CNN, but it ain't Surface!

I liked it a lot-and the reporter dealing with it seemed to actually have a lot of the micro-knowledge (like which districts are heavily populated, which counties are in the bible belt, etc). Definately a step up for CNN election coverage which I have never been all that impressed by.

One thing that did bug me a lot about CNN'c coverage-at the bottom of the screen, where they have the current vote totals flashed up, they put the name of the state in black and white in the center, well away from the canidates' names and vote totals. Most of the time by the time I figured out which state they were referring to the data was gone.

I was distinctly unimpressed by Fox's coverage this time, and in past elections/primaries they have been pretty good. I'm not a Fox fan by any means-election night is the only time I'll stop there-but last night all they seemed to run was the same old boring commentators and canidate speechs (which all the news channels run) and very little actual data.
