Co-worker is a douche

I have one of those co-workers that likes to do trendy things, then brags about how cutting-edge he is (which is in actuality a thinly veiled attempt to gain acceptance).

This week's thing to do is "the standing desk". Sitting at at desk is very unhealthy, so he wants a desk with no chair so you have to stand all day, because he has visions of being hip and cool like these guys:

Well, his request for a new desk was denied, so now he has his computer propped up on cardboard boxes to make a ghetto standing desk. I'm waiting for his workstation to topple over soon All I can do is shake my head every time I see him in his office. He looks so confident and determined standing in front of this cardboard boxes. I'll have to see if I can get some pics later.

EDIT: As promised- look at this mess:

When it falls off the boxes, just point in laugh and go back to work. Make sure you take pictures of the aftermath.

Tell him to bring in an inflatable exercise ball and use it instead of his desk chair for a couple hours a day.

Standing desk? That guy is clearly awesome. At least he's being interesting.

Let me guess, you're the guy at the iMac?

Woo and paleo-diet and crossfit! Because that's what's healthy in the 20teens.

I concur with your assessment, bone fide douche.

You stand up at a job.
When you get a career, you get to sit down and get proper middle aged ass spread.

I have one of those at home. Bouncing is fun, but slows down the typing and stuff.

The standing desk thing goes back to medieval scribes and monks. If you're in good overall health, there are some benefits. If you're overweight, have bad knees, whatever, it sucks. I wouldn't spend limited discretionary funding on it for an employee who wanted one, but if we were remodeling, I'd try to get a mix so people had the option.

Sitting in a decently padded task chair with good posture is adequate for most people. But don't slouch, you'll break yourself. Take a five minute walk-around/stretch break every hour or so; clear your head and focus your eyes on something more than 5 feet away.

too much sitting on your ass at work:

leads to obesity and metabolic syndrome (increased blood pressure, high blood sugar, excess body fat around the waist and abnormal cholesterol levels).

Too much sitting also seems to increase the risk of death from cardiovascular disease and cancer.

I'd like to stand at my desk, but I wouldn't want to stand the whole time. I'm thinking about getting a new monitor stand so I can adjust it up and down and alternate between standing and sitting.

Man, I'm never going to sit at home either then. Time to get a taller tv stand.

all the standing desk people i've seen at work have adjustable desk stands so you can still sit.

they also tend to be product managers since they are in meetings a lot and don't have to stand for like 8 hours or anything.

a lot of product managers are MBA douchebag types so i guess this kind of goes alone with standing desk = douchebag. but yeah, i've heard it can be good for your back if you are one of those people who slouches.

standing at the desk makes me less effective... all I think about every minute is why I have to fricken waste energy standing. It's also less comfortable since we're looking down too. Been there, done that.

Standing all the time sucks. I kind of enjoy a drafting stool so I can mix it up, but it's always a treat to sit in a cushy chair after standing/hard stooling all day.
