My friend, you are right. However, I am fairly familiar with current usage of the two words, I just inadvertently misspelled "vain." Let me quote one of the most quotable people ever pertaining to this:
"I don't give a damn for a man that can only spell a word one way." - Mark Twain
Or, put another way:
"I don't give a dam for a man that can only spell a werd one weigh." - Sam Clemons
I wouldn't have bothered to bring it up but I noticed someone else also used the incorrect spelling.
Oh, and I don't give a rat's ass how Mark Twain spells. It is my opinion that your writing is a reflection of you. If you lace your writing with misspelled words and poor grammar it shows that you either don't care or are poorly educated or both.
