Murray Energy supported Trump's attempt to prop up coal, but its CEO says the Senate tax plan would kill the company. And it would likely take down other coal companies, too.

You have to like the irony: Trump's bid to preserve the coal industry is being undermined by his own party. I mean, I'd rather kill the tax plan (coal is thankfully dying no matter what Trump does), but there'd be a silver lining if it hastened the death of coal and a shift toward renewable energy. Maybe someone can tell Trump that the plan would kill coal so he'll refuse to sign it!

Murray is a lunatic though. Although he is responsible for one of the best footnotes I've seen in a legal ruling from one of his defamation suits (he sues anyone who says anything negative about him or his companies).

If there's too much competition from natural gas and renewables for most of these coal companies to survive, then so be it. There aren't that many jobs there anyway. There are more jobs in the competing industries.

And for the fact that they do it on a regular basis in order to cram their legislation through passage before their own constituents can see what's going on makes for a rather comical if not ruinous sight to behold.

For instance, I doubt anyone believes Sears will be open this time next year....Sears employs ~140,000 people. Same with JCPenney, which employs ~106,000. Or Toys R Us, which employs ~70,000.

Each store employs as many persons or many more than the entire coal industry, but anyone speaking up about propping them up?
