Hi,

I'm looking for a way to wirelessly transmit my cable signal in my house. My cable outlet is in a bad place for where I want my TV, so I'd like to hook up a transmitter at the outlet to turn the signal wireless, then have a reciever at the digital cable box to receive it and turn it back to coax. Is there a product (or suite of products) that do this? I've seen a bunch of devices for converting RCA plugs into wireless and back, but I need a coax one, which seems harder to me since it has to support all the signals that come over the cable, instead of just the one that comes over the RCA cords. Also, i have a wireless network in my house for internet, so I need something that won't interfere with the 802.11b. Any suggestions?

Thanks,
\Peter

I'm sure theres a way to do it but it would involve RF transmitters and your signal would be degraded heavily. I recommend just taking a saturday or something and fishing it though your crawl space or running it along the ceiling if you don't have one.

I'd agree that wires beat wireless any day, but if you still want to do it wireless...

Is it that hard to get the signal to RCA at the source end? Can you put your cable box at the source, convert to RCA (either with the cable box or a VCR), and then send it? Some of these transmitter/receivers have an IR sender, so you can use your remote in the TV room and change the channel on the cable box in the other room.

Check out the Wavecom SR at this site:

It's an apartment and old, so things like crawl space aren't exactly in existence in it. I'd personally agree with the cable on the ceiling, but the lady friend won't go for that. Are those wireless transmitter/recievers okay for quality? I mean it only has to go like 10-15ft. Also, i have an 802.11b network up, will the 2.4GHz stuff mess with it?

Thanks,
Peter

PS How does the IR thing work? I mean I can see the receiver part reading it and sending it back, but how does it get from the transmitter into the IR input of the digital cable box?

Talk to the land lord first though, The cable company should put in a different line for free if you ask. Really, your going to lose alot of signal if you send it 5 feet or 100 feet. I really don't know of many signal transmitters but you should be able to find something that will work with a RF signal. If nothing else you can always go back to the good old rabbit ears. Besides, that is the signal quality that you are going to get. Lightning interference and things like that will apply. Also you can have trouble with weak signals being effected by ellectric magnets all through your house. I've got a 802.11b in my house and it will not work if the microwave is on, large thunderstorm outside, anything that will cause static throws it off. I don't think your going to want to be watching a game and see your signal drop out when someone turns the dryer on or a big thunder bolt crashes near by. Anyways, that's just my oppinion. Good luck with your search...
