Illegal in VA and I don't know where else. But there is a way the police also detect if you have a radar also right? Right now the rule I follow is WATCH THE TRAFFIC. When many ppl slows down for no good reason, usually there is something wrong there. But yet, there also many nut driver who would stop completely and try merge in where cars are going 60mph.

radar detector detection (RDD or V) is usually only used by state police, and besides, if they pull you over for having a radar, who said its illegal.

many radar detectors are equiped with features that detect troopers with RDD. in the event they do detect, they go into a temporary sleepmode displaying RDD or V as an led or on their lcd screen, while beeping in most cases.

if RDD goes off, you know theres a cop around, so be aware.

i've had a cobra for about 3 years, and it paid for itself in about a month. mine talks, but like most, has a cloaking device that makes it so they can't detect the radar. i love mine. as stated before, most idiots don't stop till they see the cop out of their car with someone already pulled over. at that point, how are they going to catch you? don't forget that unless there's someone in front of you for them to clock, then you may not pick up the signal till they clock you. it's still just a game and this is just a tool to help you win.

I have a whistler that cost me ~130. It sucks. Ka Band detection is horrible. I should have listened and saved for a valentine one.

Anyhow, my advice is to not rely on the radar much. I only use it on highways where there are no major cities. If the radar goes off, there is a better chance that it is not false. I've found that when K band goes off, cop is right around the corner. Also speed smartly. Don't speed and weave in and out of traffic if there is heavy traffic; you're not going to get far. It's dangerous and if traffic is heavy, I will catch up to you without weaving. Don't speed excessively in the left lane. Cops (according to speeder's guide) like to shoot to the left lane of traffic. I prefer to slow down to a speed that I can drop down to speed limit easily when in the left lane and passing. I like to speed faster in the right lane. Also look out for brake lights coming on for no apparent reason; I like to let speeder pass me and trail him and watch what he does. Also watch opposing traffic for headlight flashing. Anyhow, be safe speeding. I hate those idiots that speed and drive recklessly. No reason at all to do that.

i have always considered a radar detector, but the way i figure it, if you drive fast enough, then you never have to worry about your behind, so just keep looking out for your sides and in front of you. been doing so and have never had a ticket (4 years). if you're not going to be paying much attention, then don't drive fast in the first place.

Mine used to talk

After a couple nice and warm (HOT) summers, it no longer talks

for a bit it made distrubing noises until it finally gave up.

still beeps tho =)

That's a good deal, but I'd prolly spend $6 more and get this Escort/Passport 4500 (Part Number 660-0777) from MECI. It is also a factory refurb. The model is a few years old, but it has wideband KA and Laser detection, so you are still covering all the available bands. The Passport 4500 was rated second only to the $400 Valentine One.

BTW, I'd stay away from the Escort with the part number 660-0778, it is battery powered and does not have nearly the range of the hard-wired model.

Make sure you point the detector the right way too! Too often I see the things pointing up or down. Don't put it behind a windshield wiper either.

Did it talk in a sexy voice at first and then when it knows you a little longer it starts to scream and yell instead? Maybe the screaming is what you think "distrubing noises" LOL
