I've been holding off on buying this game due to the MW2 problems on PC.. do you guys think it is a worthwhile purchase since the patch or should I wait until it gets dirt cheap on steam?

What specifically did you have a problem with in MW2? If it was the lack of dedicated servers that is fixed up. If this patch has actually fixed the issues I can easily recommend the game, but I won't be able to confirm that myself until tonight.

As far as the price, you will be lucky to see it drop $10 in the next year, so if you want it you might as well pony up the cash now.

So the game seems playable now. The stutter is gone, and I am getting 60-90FPS on high detail (so anyone who blamed hardware can suck it). I am still getting the annoying sound looping issue though. Are other people experiencing the same thing?

The stutter thing for me was very mild and only happened once in a while.

NOW HOWEVER... after idk how many patches, the game is in a sad state. I'm still playing it but EVERY TIME I play I have at least 1 instance of the game completely locking up. On a couple occassions after I hit ctrl alt del, it will resume audio and then if I have the patience to wait, it eventually comes back up after a total of a couple minutes.

Closing the process, and re-opening the game is much faster though and only takes about 30 seconds so I haven't bothered waiting for the game to un freeze most of the time.

I didn't have any issues like this for at least the first week or so after release. Only recently has this started happening to me.

Nearly all issues that were present at rel are gone now. I still have occasional brief "lockups" that last nearly a full second. Minor, with how infrequent it is.

However, I still hate the sound, it's a horrible step back from previous COD's. Even with my higher-end headphones, discerning direction is a guessing game.

The air support, while not as bad as MW2, still needs to be nerfed.

The 6 player minimum on ranked servers is asinine.

They added even MORE douche-worthy weapons. (China Lake, anyone?)

With mod tools, and hopefully mapping tools as well coming, I can make a sniper mod and maps and retreat to my own servers.

Yeah... I was thinking last night about how ironic it is that I'm still playing their broken game.

If I'm not having my game freeze up, The server I'm playing on is crashing... It's ridiculous.

They made more money than Avatar w\ their game and they can't fix it? But I'm sure they're going to have a $15 map pack for people to buy pretty soon.

How about lag? I've been playing MW2 on PC a bit lately, and it's actually pretty good but sometimes it's laggy as hell (depends on the host's connection I guess). How does Black Ops compare in terms of lag? The PC version runs on Treyarch's dedicated servers, correct?

I dunno...since i had to wait about a month to be able to play it online i spent most of my time playing against the bots. now that it's working ok online, i have no desire to play it. the whole bs stuttering thing completely turned me off from the game.

I've been following this thread. I have an unopened copy sitting here that I picked up on a whim when Amazon had a sale back before Christmas. The past couple of days I've been debating whether or not to install it or just put it on Craigslist.

I've been focusing on BC2 and a little bit of MoH, and I'm really interested in picking up Homefront in March. So I don't know if it's worth bothering with BO. Even more so if it's still suffering from lag issues.

Well, I decided to give it shot and it runs quite well on the rig in my sig. Dedicated servers generally feel less laggy then the listen hosts in MW2 although, it really depends on the host/match. I've gotten some pretty smooth matches in MW2 and a few laggy ones in BO, but the dedicated servers get the nod for being better more often.

Dedicated servers are cool, but a number of them do have some wonky rules like you can get kicked for using melee/knives too much or using the noob tube. I was also on another server that would pop up a message saying "auto-balancing teams", and somehow I always ended up on the losing team. I'm far from the best player so its possible that it was just coincidence, but it seemed a little fishy to me.

I was under the impression that Treyarch/Activision also managed "official" ranked game servers that just served up the vanilla version of the game with matchmaking, but this doesn't appear to be the case.

Some servers do have some weird rules, but I only play hardcore so most of the rules are things like "no last stand, no using launchers for anything but taking down aircraft, no noob tubes, no 2nd chance, no bunny hopping or dolphin diving" and those are all just fine by me

Some servers are pure tactial, crouch only, sprint only to avoid grenades or direct fire, no blind nades, no sprinting from spawn, no claymores, no shooting from the hip, etc.

i find some of those rules to be quite silly, but if I'm not footing the bill for the server then I can either play by the rules or leave and go to another server.

I played a week ago for about 8 hours in a 10 hour span with no real issues so I guess its playable. The movement is herky jerky and shooting feels kinda weird, but I think thats inherent to the game.

I swear to god it was working very well lately, then about a week ago it got the "see an enemy, start to stutter" thing again

also, they were supposed to patch the spawns, but still every 2nd spawn it seems like i spawn INTO a bullet
