I have got really bored of Black Ops recently.... and after watching the video of Battlefield 3 I have decided that will be my next FPS

So I am picking up a copy of BC2 too get used to the way Battlefield games play, am I right in thinking that this will be a big shock to my system after playing MW, MW2 and BO alot?

Any tips for a noob? (i played the original battlefield - on the PC.... but that was years ago!)

BC2 is more team/objective based? (I play sabotage on COD so this shouldn't be a massive shock! - apart from people might actually play as a TEAM? )

I know that i am going to get my ass handed to me until i get used to the guns, the maps and the game - but it will still be FUN

Thanks for any help,

Karl

You should love bc2. I am a heavy black ops guy because that is what my friends play. If it were my choice I would have never left bc2. The game is more squad based and if you are not playing with a decent team that cares about the objectives you will more than likely get crushed.

The weapons are fairly balanced imho. It is possible that it is too easy to snipe but they might have fixed that in a patch. I don't think sniping got that bad when I was playing but I did hear people complain about it. Personally I would start off as a medic and level up with that first. The m60 or the pp2000 are among my favorite guns to choose but everyone has a different play style. I forget which classes get those guns. After medic play with the sniper and then engineer. I never had that much fun with the assault type.

Just remember used copies of bc2 need a 15 dollar online pass code to play.

Enjoy the game! It has been one of my favs of this generation.

BC2 was my first Battlefield game; I always played COD games more as well as Halo so I wasn't as used to the big maps and necessary teamwork.

Here's what I'd suggest:

USE THE SOCIALIZE BUTTON. I cannot stress this enough. On the Xbox 360 and PS3 it is the Back/Select button. What it does will change based on how you use it. The most useful function is spotting enemies. If you see an enemy, hit it while you're aiming at them and they will show up on everyone's radar. It's basically the Battlefield equivalent to Call of Duty's UAV. A typical player who isn't actively fighting or pursuing an enemy will always gravitate towards players that have been marked. Only caveat is to not mash it. You can use it about once every 2 seconds. If you mash it, it'll just stop working for a few seconds until you stop.

The socialize button also can indicate that you want your team to attack or defend a control point or to ask a friendly vehicle to stop and give you a ride, but it's used a lot less that way.

Learn how different weapons work. They aren't the same as COD. Grenade launchers are more useful for blowing out walls on buildings, unlike COD where you just shoot them at an enemy's feet and they die. You can't do that in BC2. But if an enemy is hiding in a building, you can blow the wall out to hurt them and expose them to fire.

Assault rifles are best fired in short bursts. Machine guns can be fired continuously without losing too much accuracy. I'm not totally sure how the recoil system works but I think bullets can travel away from where you're aiming, so you have to be careful. In COD your bullets always go where you're pointed if you're aiming down the sight, and the only inaccuracy comes from physical recoil. I am pretty sure you have a firing cone in BC2 even when aiming down the sight. Not 100% though. Regardless, weapons do less damage and have more recoil so you will usually need to be closer to get kills.

Health doesn't regen nearly as fast. Instead of getting instantly healed to 100% after five seconds, you start slowly regenerating 3 health per second after 5-6 seconds of no damage. So if you were at death's door it will take ~30 seconds to heal fully.

Make sure you use your class's abilities a lot. Note: you will not start with them but you get them after playing a bit with each class. As a medic you don't start with medpacks or paddles but you will get them. Same with assaults and ammo packs, engineers and the repair tool, or recons with motion sensors and mortar strikes. Basically, throw ammo or health at your teammates or even at your own feet as often as you can. You help yourself and everyone else. Plus it's worth lots of points, so you unlock new gear faster. It's always a good idea to follow an engineer around if you're an assault so you can restock their anti-tank weapons, or to follow anyone as a medic to replenish their health.

I have the game on PC, can any console players confirm that there is a voice localization option on the console versions? If there is you should turn it on. By default (on PC), Russian players will actually speak Russian which is kind of unhelpful if you can't understand it. Better they speak English with Russian accents so you know when your teammates (or enemies) are reloading, healing, spotting a vehicle, etc.

I didn't like BC2. It had an odd mix of arcadey CoD mechanics and classic BF mechanics that didn't flow well with me. Better to pick one or the other and do that well rather than not be the best for either side (IMO of course). BF3 will hopefully return to the true tactical and squad based roots of BF.

Many people that like CoD won't like BC2. It's a lot slower and you have to work with teams much more.

Bought it just yesterday for $20 bucks on Steam. It's $5 off on D2D but I like Steam's system in case my hard drive gets nuked. Very fun game. Reminds me a lot of the Infiltration mod for UT Classic. (Hardest thing to get used to was lack of prone and lean, but it doesn't detract from the game as much as I thought it would.)

COD is not my cup of tea, I'd rather play a TF2/CS:S match with some friends if I wanted that arcadey of a shooter (Or hell, even UT2k4). BC2 is pretty much on point. If you want fast action, play on regular servers. If you want to slow things down, play on the hardcore servers that strips out the minimap, enemy spotting, and crosshair overlays. I love how I can get bored of one style of play, switch servers and immediately have a change of pace without having to change gametype. Good stuff.

My $.02.

By the way, look into the hit detection fix if you have a decent internet connection. Apparently the game is designed with 100ms average ping in mind; if you've got less than that the hit detection boxes will over compensate and you'll realize your shots that should surely land don't kill your opponents. Annoying.

Whoa: Totally just realized this thread is posted in the console subforum....eh. Most of my points still stand.

This.

BC2's awesome and all, but it doesn't substitute CoD for me. I'm glad it's slow-paced, because fast + lousy hit detection =

I played BC2 for a few hours, I got awped literally every 30 seconds, it seemed to happen regardless of what I did. I got 2 kills and died around 60 times. The only way I kept from getting awped was to hide behind something, but as soon as I popped my head up

BOOM HEADSHOT.

^ LOL noob. What platform were you playing on?
I've played all of the CoDs since 4 and I have to say that BF:BC2 makes them all obsolete and boring IMO.

It does make CoD look really obsolete. I disagree with boring, though. BC2 has never been as thrilling as those days playing Killhouse or Shipment.

I find BC2 boring because of its slow pace, but it lets me relax and indulge myself in its visuals.

Yeah, I had pretty much the same experience. Constantly getting sniped from a mile away, if I were to much to expose myself long enough to try to cap a flag by myself. And I'd always be doing it by myself, because I was the only noob that didn't realize sitting under a tree sniping other snipers and the occasional hero trying to cap a flag is the preferred way to play the game for most.

If I had a proper team by my side that was focused on the objectives we'd probably win every time, despite all of us likely having negative k/d from the constant sniping. Probably wouldnt be satisfying though.

Now if I had a team, playing against another team also focused on the objectives with the occasional sniper, then yeah, the game would probably be awesome. But overall it's a pretty terrible experience to pick up and play with and against randoms.

I realize the sniper is a staple class and the chance of a BF game being released without one is unlikely until hell freezes over, but they really do ruin random games, to the point where Im so discouraged from trying to complete objectives that I just spend more time dicking around with UAVs than the objective. Snipers aren't dominant in COD like they are in BF, since the scale of the games are so different. Perhaps the experience has changed since the game has been out for a year, but it's always felt like the game had the potential to be way more fun than it actually was.

Sounds like you need a better group to play with. Me and my friends always go for the captures, and win a lot of the time.

Yeah, I certainly recognize that, but no one else I know is interested at this point. It just seems like an absolute requirement to have your own team to have a fun and satisfying match of bc2.

Hopefully the next BF is more conducive to pick up games with random.

I am hoping for a straight deathmatch on BF3. I know they would have to figure something out with the vehicles, but I just like having a little mindless fun every once in awhile, instead of working towards objectives.

Just a little update:

I have played it for about 2 hours....... it is all good so far liking the bigger maps and the team based play.

I seem to like the recon class the most - sitting back spotting/sniping although it is hard too get used to bullet drop coming from COD!

I dont seem to be able to play as a medic - i think this is more because i have never really played with machine gun

Assault is a fun class with the grenade launcher blowing up buildings - although that is still strange being able blow up walls ect...

Engineer class is fun with the silenced weapons - i always played with ghost/silenced on COD

Anyway so far so good! It will take me a good few more hours to get used to the physics of the game but I will get it!

Thanks again for all the tips/info

It's in the pc gaming forum but it has more information than you'll ever need for playing BC2. Much of the information does apply to consoles.

I would say if bullet drop is making it hard to hit guys while sniping, you're too far away. You should get close enough that bullet drop is insignificant. It might make it hard to pull off a headshot but if you can't even hit the body then you're probably too far.

I just don't like it when snipers sit back really far and do nothing to help their team. Remember to use your motion sensor and mortar strike (once you unlock them). A mortar strike can easily kill a tank.

The most annoying thing is when you get raped by the Chinook (or whatever helicopter that is) with a level 50 in it just circling around your spawn point spamming the hell out of it raping you

Be assault and pop smoke. That makes snipers a lot less annoying and lets you move up. That being said, it is much more fun playing with buddies that work together.
