reminds me of playing a demo for unreal 2003. multiplayer was a blast, so after playing the demo (2 maps) for a month or so I went and bought the full game to get more maps.

I could see more maps and servers when I started the game up after buying it, but except for the demo maps, no one was online in the game ANYWHERE I could get to with sub 400ms ping.

so bought the game, still playing the same old maps.

as to the DLC and being stuck without anyone to play with if you do not buy it, it is a real turn off from a lot of games I have been finding. I paid for the several different DLC for BF just so I could play with friends, then hardly played the last DLC as the friends gave up on it by then (been playing month after month after month).

You guys keep buying it in the numbers you do, they will keep making them like that and taking your money. Dont blame them for liking to fleece willing sheep.

Haven't bought a FPS for over $10 in the past 4 years with exception for BL2 when it first came out. Don't feel like I missed anything.

Yeah, I haven't bought DLC for a shooter since Halo 3 (I bought a couple of songs on Rock Band 2). It's ridiculous to expect people to buy a $60 game, then pay another $2-3 per map over and over. You should have just gone of the map pass, of course.

Halo 4 recently made it so their regular Team Slayer REQUIRED one of the DLC packs, and I haven't played it since. The game went from having something like 2,000 people in Team Slayer to about 700-800.

I noticed Halo 4's playing numbers PLUMMETED the more DLCs were released. So I stopped playing.

99% of people who play RPGs/ARPGs

You do realize Borderlands is basically Diablo as an FPS, right? You are meant to grind and level up and make your character as badass as possible. It sounds like you approached it as a linear shooter a la Half Life or something, which is missing the point of what an ARPG experience is supposed to be about.

Typical noncasual gamer thinking that most people game like them. Newsflash, most people don't. Since no one I know would consider themselves a gamer, or use a forum to talk about games, I think I know a LOT of casual gamers (thank god for college life and actually getting out there). I don't know any enthusiasts anymore and the things that people on a forum care about are VASTLY different from what the casual gamer plays about. I can assure you, the casual gamers I know who bought BL2, did so just to play the story line and have fun when they were by themselves and not out and about.

More specifically though, I don't buy DLCs because by the time they come out, I usually am done with the game. I'm thinking of getting BF4/Premium or whatever though. Not positive since I won't even be in the country for 6 months and I will only have access to satelite internet and no gaming PC so not even sure if it's worth it.

The season pass + original BL2 was available for ~$13 from greenmangaming recently. Of course that's not currently available, but there have been lots of sales on BL2 stuff specifically.

Yeah, it will go on sale for ~$20 for all of it (not sure about most recent upgrade pack to final level cap) several times per year.

I paid $5 for the mechromancer upgrade pack during the steam summer sale...but ignored Krieg, for some reason, as I thought I would burn out with this one like I did with BL1. ...that hasn't happened yet. :\

If you're still playing last year's COD by the time the fifth DLC comes out I'm going to guess you got your money's worth.

It's pretty simple for me... If I'm having fun playing an online mulii-player game I'll buy the DLC if it means I get more content I will enjoy. If I'm not, I obviously don't care.

For single-player/offline games I will generally wait for a sale on both the game and DLC. I got Borderlands 2 + the season pass for ~$20 I think, and all the New Vegas DLC for dirt cheap. I have enough backlog in my Steam library to scratch the gaming itch that I don't really feel compelled to pay full price for any single player games.

I think the whole gimmick reaks and EA's Battlefield series is a complete ripoff. They already have a moden war shooter just released 2 years ago that a lot of people have paid north of a $100 or more now when everyone jumps ship to BF4 hope they are prepared to do it all over again.

I can get the premium service for my BF3 game for 20 dollars. Almost seems like a no brainer, but I am afraid in a month peeps will dump the game for BF4. I honestly don't see a lot of different with BF4 though *shrugs*.

It looks like they give you a whole lot more than what Activision gives you at least?

I played COD MW and World at War for at least a year without expansions. Loved those games. I got the DLC for BO2 because I had too. There is simply no one to play without buying the season pass. Not unless I connect to international servers with people speaking god knows what, a ping of 120+, while my friends go trol-lol-lol. It doesn't even matter what the pings are because now they have some crazy ass net code that handicaps you. Even when I have a great game, it feels like all I did was finally get on with a winning connection. The players animations and motions are not even the slightest bit realistic anymore. Feels like we're all on roller blades and every one has a different FOV and POV during the game.

Think I finally learned my lesson. I have to practice up on some BF4 because COD keeps getting worse with each iteration.

I guess I just don't understand why gamers treat the whole DLC thing as some kind of scam/gimmick. It' not as if DICE/EA weren't up front about DLC for BF3. We all knew it would be the case, so there was no surprise or hidden cost. Plus, BF3 Premium, which includes the full game plus all DLC has been $40 (sometimes less on sale) for months now. https://www.origin.com/en-us/store/buy/battlefield-3/pc-download/bundle/premium-edition-ANW.html

You don't have to buy games on launch day, but if you want to buy games when they are new and in high demand you can expect to pay for that luxury.

Might be obvious but its still fecking ridiculous. Thats why I didnt buy Borderlands 2 when it was on sale for 10 bucks. Because all the DLC was still $130 and im pretty sure you need some of them to reach the level cap. A LA Fallout New Vegas which forced you to buy all 5 DLC if you wanted to hit max level. Or Battlefield 3 (and im sure BF4) will come out with 100$ worth of map/gun packs that everybody will buy. This model of gaming needs to go.

No longer are you paying $60 for a full game, you are paying $60 for an entry fee with the option to buy the full game for another $100 or so dollars.

I don't understand why this is acceptable. All rich people who pay this shit need to get out of video gaming and go back to wine and cheese tasting or something.

Actually max level is 30 in New Vegas which is 10 higher than Fallout 3 (without DLC in either game).

Plus less than a month after New Vegas debuted they had it on sale dirt cheap thru Steam. And the DLC's were dirt cheap a short time after they debuted.

If you really wanna bitch it should be about Microsoft Flight, which was a great big pee-pee slap to everyone waiting on the next plane simulator and a giant ripoff as well.

Question is, why do you "need" to buy the DLCs? Why do you "need" to hit the level cap in borderlands? Why not just play the game, have fun, and be done with it?

for some people, they buy games for the multiplayer. Being seeded with noobs for not buying DLC is not fun.

Max level in New Vegas without DLC is 30. Max level with DLC is 50. So if you want to hit max level, you must buy the DLC.

Other than that, not sure what you are talking about.

i still remember BF42, awesome game (still the best of the set IMHO) right up till they started with addons.. Jet packs? Heck the best stuff for that game was the FAN made stuff (free!!!).. but for a brief 6 month or year when it was just BF42.. it was maybe the best Multi player game ever..

I have a much different view of DLC. I bought both Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas more than a year after FONV debutted because I didn't realize they worked at shooters - turned out I like them even more than straight shooters. But I'll be buying Fallout 4 on Day One (for PCs) and happily buying all the DLC. This allows the developer to present more content than would otherwise be economically feasible. The developer is NOT your mommy and does not owe you free stuff.

I somewhat agree on multiplayer map packs - those seem to me to be vastly over-priced. But as I'm too old to play twitch shooters competitively that doesn't really affect me so I'm not complaining.

I game to have fun -- I thought that was the point(?) Leveling up and the constant weapon turnover was the least interesting part of the game to me.

I approached it like I approached S.T.A.L.K.E.R.; an open-world, mission-based game with an interesting environment and fun combat mechanics. I increased the level of my equipment as necessary to deal with whatever was next.

I played co-op with a friend who was obsessed with farming and playing the numbers game. It wasn't fun playing with him...and he kept commenting about how I wasn't leveling high enough. When I beat the game I think I was only level 33 or something, and he acted like I was an idiot or something because I did it that way.

I'll leave the grinding and number crunching to the accountants and pure RPG players, I suppose. I'm just glad the makers of Borderlands weren't so narrow-minded to make a game that doesn't stand well on its own for people who don't care about that stuff. There's really a whole lot more to BL than that.

Different strokes, right?
Exactly right. It's a freakin' video game, just enjoy it - reaching the level cap is NOT an accomplishment.

The better games can charge more because they know people will know they will buy it. They have a great reputation.
