CoD2 Demo - "1628: Failed to complete installation"

Hi, I'm trying to install the Call of Duty 2 demo, but once it unzips itself, the installer will start and then crap out with "1628: Failed to complete installation."

It's very cryptic, and no other errors occur with it. I've tried everything suggested by InstallShield's own FAQ page, without any result.

Anyone else get this problem/know how to fix it?

My system is as follows:

AthXP 2800+
BFG GeForce 6800 GT OC (256)
1 GB DDR400 Dual Channel by GeIL
SoundBlaster Live! X-Gamer 5.1
WinXP Pro

Running latest drivers on everything.

try running services.msc and see DCOM service is enabled...
i'd recommand bf2 over cod2 though..

I'm guessing it's the error between 1627 and 1629.

Does the file give you the option to just Unzip to a location without continuing with Setup? If it does, just Unzip it, then Manually run the Setup and see if it works.

It doesn't give an option to, but I extracted it with WinRAR and running the "Call of Duty(R) 2 Demo.msi" file results in a "you must run setup.exe" error.

And running setup.exe results in the 1628: failed to complete installation error.

I have an installation of Windows 2000 on a secondary hard drive, I'm going to try to install it under windows 2000 to see if it works...

Hmm, is your OS(I assume you tried WinXP) completely up to date? It might need an updated Installer. If you have Alcohol120, Daemon Tools, or another Image mounting program running, you might want to disable them first as well.

Yes, it's completely up to date. I ran windows update and it shows no updates available. I do not have Alcohol 120%, and I uninstalled Daemon Tools (that was one of the first things I did because I thought that might be the problem) but still get the error.

Well, it worked fine on the Windows 2000 installation (go figure), but still, I wonder why it wouldn't install on my XP installation.
