Hi Guys,

I am very new to the COD4 series and am really enjoying it so far. I also purchased the logitech MX518 mouse after hearing great reviews about it. I am a moderate gamer and am trying to improve in the multiplayer aspect of the game. I guess what I am looking for is if someone who owns the MX518 can advise how they have assigned the buttons for better gameplay experience. I like using the arrow keys instead of the w,s,a,d.

Thank you.

Thank you.

For a Better Gameplay experiance

1. Map Movement to WASD. They are there for a reason. Its to spread your arms out which makes playing more comfortable.

2. Left Click Shoot, Right Click Scope. Thats all you need to kick ass.

Definitely don't use the arrow keys.....Even Numpad is a better solution. What would you use for lean, crouch, prone if you used the arrow keys? Scary thought!

As for the mouse, I remapped some keys to the mouse so I don't have to use 3-7 or whatever for non-primary weapons. Special Grenade to Thumb 1 etc. I wouldn't recommend mapping Hold Breath to your mouse though as I don't like the added pressure on the mouse when aiming.

I also remapped Prone to X as Z doesn't feel as natural to me. I also know some people that remap Sprint away from Shift although I don't have any problems with it. And whatever is at CTRL, I remapped that or don't use it anymore.

I used to prefer to use the arrow keys too, but then I moved to WASD for various reasons and now I couldn't go back. There's just not enough immediate buttons.

Arrow keys are horrible. They are so far away from anything even if you do remap all the other keys.

I use the numpad in everything. The WASD keys aren't aligned properly and the arrow keys don't have enough other keys around them. My desk is big enough that I can push the keyboard to the side when playing a game and not have to cramp up my arms.

As for the original question, one problem with the MX518 is that the drivers don't support game profiles. You can remap the buttons to keys (so that games recognize them), but they will stay that way for everything including Windows. If you don't already have an MX518, you're better off getting a G5 instead (the newer version with two side buttons), which does support profiles.

Since your using arrow keys i'm going to assume (make an ass out of you and me, lol love that saying) that your just starting out/not a very avid gamer. When i first started playing games on PC regularly, i was using arrows too. Biggest tip i can give you, get used to wasd setup, it's better to have those other keys around for actions (crouch, lean, prone, walk, grenades ,switch weapons without moving hands from movement etc).

You will never look back once you get used to it, yes they are not perfectly aligned, but seriously it takes like a 3 gaming sessions to get used to it, try it. As for the mouse, i reserve buttons on the mouse for actions that need to be used quickly, each game is different, but just play it a bit and you'll figure which actions YOU need to be able to use quickly. Well, thats my input anyways.

Edit: misc errors and such

What good is a frag grenade button and red dot scope button going to do me in Windows?

Thank you so much for the advise and tips. Like someone also mentioned in the earlier post, I am not an avid gamer and recently picked up on gaming after being out of it for a while. Well, I only played halo for PC for the past 2 years but thats it and that too becaue i am good at it and its an easy game to pick up and start killing .

Since I use the arrow keys for halo, I am just used to it as I have never used the WSAD keys and I guess it will take time to get used to it. My movement in COD4 is just horrible and I guess my reflex is a little weak in the game so I keep dying and get at most like 5-7 kills but die like 30 times, if not more. I was using the WSAD keys and on many occasions i would press the wrong keys such as reloading and have remapped the crouch and sprint keys as the 2 side buttons on the MX518. Left click to shoot, right to zoom, middle mouse button to throw nade, scroll wheel to change weapons. I feel that there are too many buttons to use and that is where i get frustrated. I will keep playing using the WSAD keys and hopefully with practice can get better. For me this game in multiplayer is hard and I guess i just have to be patient with it.

Once again Thank you and feel free to provide more tips if you want.

They might be useful in heated arguments on AT. You can click the other guy's icon and pretend you just heatshotted him, making you feel better.

There's certainly a learning curve but once you get used to it, its second-nature and will reduce the learning curve in future games you pick up.

If you haven't played through the single-player campaign, that's a good way to get used to the controls. Some parts are kinda fast-paced, but at least you'll have a fighting chance before you get killed.

Also, another good way to get used to the controls and game speed is to find an empty server and just run around in there. Learn the maps, learn how to move, learn how to shoot. Then start putting that together and learn how to move and shoot and jump and lean etc. Just pick a point and shoot at it. Run around, try and pick up that same spot and hit it etc.

Once you feel comfortable enough with the controls then you can worry about killing live targets. Try and keep it simple at first. Find cover, go crouch/prone, bring up sights and try to cover a bottle-neck or narrow corridor. Kill anything that comes your way. Good luck!

You shouldn't have to remap your Mouse Keys in Windows to the default keys in COD4. Just remap the keys in COD4 by pressing the corresponding mouse key. For instance, if you wanted to remap grenades to Thumb Button 1, it would show up in COD as G or KB Left Arrow.

Some games support the keys natively, allowing you to keep the default forward/backward/etc. bindings, but many don't. I don't think I have seen a single game that supports all eight buttons without some kind of remapping (or six, if you don't count the sensitivity adjustment buttons). Most recent ones work with four or five buttons, although there are exceptions to that too.

good to see your trying the wasd layout, you really will get used to it with time. Again i'll say, just keep playing the game(and other games as well), and you'll find out what you like mapped where. You will have to try a few different layouts for find the one which is most comfortable.

Thanks again, I will keep using the WSAD and I am sure I am bound to get used to it. To be honest I havent tried the single player campaign until last night and I was like DAMN!!!! I bought the game mainly for its online play. I will continue with the single campaign and then get into the multiplayer and maybe by then i will be okay with using WSAD. I just hate that learning curve part and it gets frustrating but I have only logged in like maybe 3-4 hours into it. Guess I am very impatient .

I will use the advise for going into an empty server too just so i can learn the maps and work on my shooting ability which is horrible in multiplayer.

I remap all the keys!

I move forward with Right mouse button, shoot with left. Toggle the sights with middle mouse button. Run with side mouse. E=left R=Back T=right D=crouch Jump=spacebar and so on. I have always used this setup as I can get to more buttons very easily and my sits on the keyboard with a natural feel.

i switched from the number pad arrow keys to WASD years back after playing my first shooter. took a couple weeks to get used to but it is worlds better.

i have an mx518 and on cod4 i map it like this:

Back Thumb Button to ZOOM WEAPON IN
Front Thumb Button to RELOAD
Left Click to FIRE PRIMARY WEAPON
Right Click to KNIFE (I knife a lot)
Depress Mouse Wheel to Jump (also keep jump as space) -
mouse wheel up and down to switch weapons.

i cant stress enough that using the two thumb buttons is a great way to free up some of your left hand functions.

I like your setup and will give it a try when i get home tonight. I want to get used to using the WSAD setup as well as most games use those keys so its better to start now then to keep using the arrow keys. The 2 games i am actually playing right now are crysis and cod4.

thanks. i think it works out well, my left hand is primarily movement-based and switching weapon function (like to the noob tube). keeping the zooming to your left thumb lets you zoom and fire at the same time yet release the zoom super fast if need be. you will use this the most in this game. my thumb naturally rests on the back button of the mouse so it is perfect.
in fact in any game i play online, i always make the back thumb mouse button zoom, and the front thumb mouse button relaod.

and you need to reload a lot before going into certain areasof a battle, so having it by your thumb also is good IMO.

some people use the right mouse button for crouching or prone which makes sense too, or nade throwing.
in this game you get 1 frag most of the time unless u use a perk for 3 frags so it isnt as necessary. and you cant pick up nades from dead bodies either.

i knife a lot so i made it knife.

i can see using the mouse wheel depress for something else though, since space for jump is easy enough.

I like arrow keys for racing games.

That's it.

For shooters, i prefer RDFG.
That allows me lots of space on all sides for setting binds for everything, & in some games, i literally mean everything.

I use the arrow keys and im very succssful in FPS games both online and offline, im usually (if i try and im not just messing around) can be in the top 3 players high highest kills/score etc. Except in CS, CS eludes me.

You guys shouldnt underestimate arrow key users!
