COD4 Weird FPS Dips

Hey guys,
I posted a while back regarding my problem about my COD4 FPS dropping to the 10s. Now, I think I found the solution after hours of tinkering with my settings. It seems that the texture resolution, normal map resolution, and specular map resolutions have something to do with it.

Whenever I join a server, I can see that every few seconds, my FPS dips to around 10-20 FPS even with my average going at around 90. Then I experimented moving all three settings to normal, still FPS dips. Then I tried moving it back to High and even Extra, miraculously, it stays steady within the 80s and 90s range! The issue though is that whenever I quit and then rejoin, the FPS dipping goes back and I have to reapply this "fix".

Maybe some of the gurus here could tell me what exactly is going on. For added info, I've updated drivers, reverted them back to older versions, then made updates again. All of these were done via safe mode uninstall. Is there a permanent fix to this? Thanks!

I have this same issue. just started recently. I think its the latest driver (whql) they released. I've been trying to figure out what it is and have been farting around with the settings too but remembering i've never had problems before that it must be the drivers. I"m running a q6600 @ 3ghz and gtx 275. It shouldn't dip like it is at all. Where it hits the 90fps wall but dips to even 8fps all the time. Annoying!

Wow, even on the green side this happens huh? I have the same experience, this didn't used to happen before as well, then I remembered updating my drivers then this started happening! I can't be too sure though but theoretically, this shouldn't be happening since other 4850 owners playing COD4 are happy with their FPS.

You (both of you) should try using older drivers, or whatever drivers you were using before the issue started happening, to further isolate or identify the problem.

Has CoD4 been patched? Maybe a patch introduced the problem.

This has happened to a couple of my game buddies, exact same symptoms, each time it turned out to be processor throttling. I'm not saying this is your case, but check your cooling and make sure one of your pegs hasn't come loose. Ironically, many other games would not show this extreme dips.

My theoretical explanation is the cod4 engine expects a consistent level of processor performance and quick drops cause problems with it.

drivers....yup. problem solved. 190....drivers are pooched for me.
