Run and gunning is where you just run around, and spray with your automatic. If you arent using the sights and you dont have any real strategy then you are Run and Gunning...

Its usually only realism/hardcore servers that dont like it

Uh...complaining about running and gunning as opposed to what? Camping and squatting? Lmao. If you're running and gunning and they're getting the drop on you in their little camp grounds of death and still crying, that means you're killing them and they suck, so its not worth paying any attention to them anyways.

running and gunning? congrats you just described COD2+

Reason its frown upon is because thats the only option you have when maps are small and you have no vehicles or any kind of strategy to begin with to work with.

in COD years, it started when COD2 was launched and the concept has spilled over... mind you i'm talking about multiplayer only.

Yup. It sounds silly to me too. Just another "unspoken" rule developed by people who suck and are tired of getting owned.

Basically it is running around not using cover, shooting randomly, etc. Hardcore servers are the usual ones that frown on it, but you do make an easy +10 with a well aimed shot.

Run and Gun is the basis of FPS game play. All the way back to the wolfenstein/doom. It never really needed a name until games like Counter-Strike were created, where movement affected your aim, thereby glorifying the camper aka llama.

Some people are trying to define run and gun as "shooting randomly" but this was always called the spray and pray or the blind shot. Anyone who tries to group run and gun in with shooting randomly is doing so in an effort to create a negative connotation where one doesn't exist.

The best example of a through and through "running-and-gunning" game is Quake 3 arena or Unreal Tournament. There is little or no tactical layer to it, it's all running around and using reflexes. Newer shooters are more refined, so they make this type of blazing guns attitude somewhat less effective, because there are now more options than simply running around and shooting at anything that moves. Not to say that it doesn't have it's place, I just get sick of hearing people bitch and moan about "campers" or whatever. All these types of game-play have their place in certain situations, they all work for different environments and/or opponents.

Some things that have made running-and-gunning (spray and pray) less effective are: Movement affecting accuracy. The addition of tactical devices such as grenades or flash-bangs, mines or sniper rifles, artillery strikes and vehicles. The allowance for HUGE maps, because running around like a madman is exponentially less effective in an open area where you can just get picked off from a distance. The ability to voice chat with people, it adds an effective layer of tactics to game-play, letting you actually PLAN out routes and plans of attack. Squad based play, and objectives, they add the same thing that voice chat does, multiple layers of objectives and/or tactics.

I don't think that running-and-gunning is useless, sometimes it's necessary. I think that the added complexity only proves to enrich our gaming experience, and it provides more challenge than just running and shooting at everything, while jumping and dodging.

Besides, you camper haters have it good, too. Just toss in a grenade or two. Quit being a baby about it.

Sorry, my brain cannot form a proper response to that so I'm just going to spit whatever I was eating all over my monitor and then close the thread.

honestly, if you think quake 3 doesn't require some serious strategy then you have no clue what you're talking about.

Yup. It sounds silly to me too. Just another "unspoken" rule developed by people who suck and are tired of getting owned.

NO. Let me repeat, NO.

COD was a WW2 game. Considered by most hardcore "realism" fans to be the best of the bunch. Most of the hardcore community wanted people to act as a real soldier would act, death is bad and strategically engaging the enemy is good. Running straight down the street shooting from your hip with a machine gun is not very realistic.

It has nothing to do with 'getting owned'. It is a statement that the user base on that server wants realism. It is no different than moving to a different server because you don't like the game type or the map currently being played.

ROFL. I'm no expert on realism, since I didn't participate in any WWII campaign (I did watch Band of Brothers, Saving Priv. Ryan, Letters to Iwo Jima, Flags of Our Fathers etc. I also stayed at a Holiday Inn Express), but think about how absurd that position is. Because throwing wave after wave against a gauntlet of MG42s and fixed artillery at Normandy was so "tactical"?

Running and gunning doesn't mean you're aimlessly running and exposing yourself unnecessarily. You're still able to use cover, the key is displacing and positioning yourself
to gain an advantage and is every bit as "realistic" as camping or squatting and protecting a fixed position or whatever the people on the server deem appropriate. Just watch any fire fight in any of the movies/series I listed above and you'll see there's plenty of "running and gunning" going on. Honestly you could call Major Winters "Rambo" in BoB and you wouldn't be too far off the mark.

Which brings me back to my original point. If you're "running and gunning", typically that means there's a reason compelling you to move. Whether its an objective or to gain tactical positioning, or simply to move to a position the enemy isn't expecting you to be. Typically campers/squatters will have the advantage in that case, if they're complaining they're getting owned and killed because they got caught with their pants down, plain and simple. Otherwise there would be no need to complain would there?

As I already said, the definition is that of the server. Think of it as a game type. If you don't like their rules then get off their server. Why does it even bother you?

And you are also making the mistake of assuming that there are only two categories:

1) Run & Gun
2) Campers/Squatters

This is incorrect. There is a big difference between someone tagged as r&g/nade spammer/etc. and someone who rushes an objective strategically.

Probably frowned upon on realism servers cause it works so well. It's a game. Once you treat it as such and exploit those "unrealistic" limits, you can do better. If you believe in artificially gimping yourself to be "realistic", it will be annoying to see someone else not doing the same... I've done it. Playing Armed Assault or any game with iron sights, I tried to play it real in SP and MP: all it did was get me killed by 'run and gunners'. Once I joined the fray, I did better and had more fun.

Exactly. I haven't played COD4 but in general, I don't have much respect for people who make up artificial rules like this.

WTF is BAWW

the main reason i play games like Halo 3, UT3, Quate3.. is because "running and gunning" is 10000000x more fun then camping someplace

Funny, I've yet to see any "rules" stated or listed in CoD4 servers. If anything I've seen servers run messages in other games that frown upon camping/squatting. Its obviously not bothering me, as I don't complain, I adapt. And in this case, its the squatters/campers complaining that people aren't playing by their rules or expectations and people are *gasp* moving around!

And you are also making the mistake of assuming that there are only two categories:

2) Campers/Squatters
Nope, I didn't set any limitations or definitions, but you did. I'm well aware that there's no point in setting such limitations or code of conduct expectations as tactics can and will change dynamically based on the situation. Its why I prefer game types that encourage both, like HQ in CoD4.

This is incorrect. There is a big difference between someone tagged as r&g/nade spammer/etc. and someone who rushes an objective strategically.
Really? Based on what? Whatever you or the server's mood is? Or whether or not you just got owned?

Anyways, people who run and gun and get kills without dieing are basically those ppl with insane reflexes and a knack for getting headshots, although it may seem like noob players do it, it takes more skill then any other tactic.

Agreed. I was always a run n gun guy in CS, and still am with TF2, although it's with the demoman so I have to be a bit more conservartive.

I've always preferred running n gunning in CS but there is a time an place to camp.. like when you just planted the bomb. COD4 allows you to camp or run and gun, or with UAV jammer, flank n shank. You need to be able to do either depending on the situation.

"Running and gunning" is fine, but it really only works on Shipment and maybe Vacant. Otherwise you'll get picked off pretty easily by decent players. I tend to move quickly, but my shots are aimed well. Or I spray to make my enemies take the route I want them to.

Those are my feelings too. If you're running around you're going to get spotted, or get cought up in the line of fire with a bullet or nade. If you're camping, you're going to get sniped, nade, or remembered. And if your team sucks you're not going to be able to camp anywhere.

agreed.

Id rather have someone kill me who is running around - rather then someone see me from his corner and kill me.
