Coda or something else?

I am getting back into webdesign and working on making a site of my own (not a blog but more of a magazine portal) that will be running most likely on Word Press. I'd like to create my own wordpress theme and other sites down the line as well.

Is Coda worth the $?
Everyone praises it so I'm willing to buy it if it is but just curious? Is there a better pay-to-use or free web development app out there? It doesn't have to have built in FTP or terminal either.

I have used Coda, and while it's a decent HTML editor... it's not perfect. All the tag completion methods don't always work. The snippets feature isn't as useful as I thought it would be, but it's a fairly quick hand code editor with an "ok" CSS editor built in. CSSEdit is a much better tool for editing CSS IMO.

There is also RapidWeaver ( http://www.realmacsoftware.com/rapidweaver/ ), which to me seems like a more complete solution. But I haven't tried it. I'm actually going to download it now, and give it a shot.

Ok.. I tried Rapidweaver, and it's great for people that don't really do any coding. It has no code editor that I can find, so it would be pretty useless to to build a Wordpress blog.

So Coda is probably the best choice?

Im surprised you said its incomplete - it seems to be the "mac daddy" (pun intended) of coders in OS X - thus justifying its 80 dollar price tag.

I should justify my context. It's a great app, but I've been using Dreamweaver for years on the Windows side before I switched over to OS X. And compared to Dreamweaver, Coda seems just short of the integrated solution you get in Dreamweaver.

If my company didn't pay for me to use Dreamweaver, though, I would use Coda solely... as it has been the best solution that I've found so far.

I think it is worth the $80.

I'm in a similar boat as you my friend. I don't know whether to get Coda or to get Transmit and TextMate. I already own CSSEdit 2.

I'm currently using CyberDuck and TextWrangler. While they do suffice, I would really like to be up there a bit more and use something that could increase my productivity.

Honestly though, if money is tight for you, I would go for the CyberDuck, TextWrangler, Firebug route. It's a great combo, and it'll get you where you need to go.

OK, I just got TextMate. I think it's more for what I'm going to be using it for. I'll have to get Transmit when I get a bit more money.

I used to use Dreamweaver a lot on my Mac, namely because I used Dreamweaver on my PC. I've been using Coda for about 3 months now and it's grown on me a lot. It has a lot of great features and works better for me than Dreamweaver. One particular thing I like is that when you edit a file on your local machine, an icon appears next to it letting you know it needs to be uploaded to your remote server. Then when you're done your work and want to upload, all you have to do is press "publish all" and it'll upload all of the files you've modified.
