Well this is the deal.. I was able to get a copy of the longhorn alpha edition... I have been running it for about 10 days. Thus far I havent had too many problems with it but I was wondering if any one on the forum was familar with it and wanted to talk more often about the things we have discoverd... Thus far my major problems have included...
1) getting the ie download manager to work properly
2) avoiding the unkown file version message box
3) fully coquering the activation issue... ( works until you restart)
4) Changing the resolution and other basic display properties.
5) Windows update - can you use it or not?
6) Reducing the Windows Starup sound lag
Aside from that I have many PC games (warcraft 3, metal of honor allied assualt, fifa2003) running well along with all my necessary drivers. This is all with the current WinFS file system settings in place.... for the most part I have not had much of a performance drop... Using Performance Test 4.0 I get a score of 310 with XP professional and 262 with Longhorn and Winfs. SO not too bad... well if you have any input or just want to contribute please do... I honestly dont know much of anything about this stuff so I am learning quite a bit from forum entries and various CS majors around my dorm.

Ahh, so you pirated it and are now complaining because you cant get beta software to work perfectly. Got it.

Anyone who's brave (possibly stupid) enough to install a leaked OS deserves a little respect...

For what? What did they do? They did not code the OS. Chances are they are not coding applications for that OS. What are they giving the community? Another pirate to blame for some of the crap out there. And quite possibly a headache when we listen to him belly ache about how bad certain things are.

Not brave, stupid is a much better word, but I dont think it fully expresses my feelings about this.

I agree n0c. MS has their beta tester program in place for that specific reason. You sign up for the customer preview program, get access to their download site, get a fully licensed key for installation and access to their newsgroups. I signed up, all it took was a few clicks and keystrokes, and I am now a legitimate tester for .NET Server 2003 RC2 and Exchange 2003 beta 2.

I would think the administrators of this site will lock this fairly quickly. Your 'leaked' copy is essentially warez.

He's definitely not helping, but is he really hurting? It's ust like a kid playing with a toy that his older brother hid from him. It's not like MS intended to sell the alpha version.

Also, I didn't read his post as complaining about anything. He was just listing the problems he noticed.

Ok, complaining was the wrong word. But discussing the problems without having any idea how to get them fixed is absolutely useless. Is he hurting? No, not really. Supporting Microsoft is important in the US's time of fear. Piracy is still annoying.

You can't pirate something that isn't being sold. Also keep in mind that Paul Thurrot does this all the time and nobody at Microsoft ever bust down his door.

I'm pretty sure they leak these on purpose and use them as unofficial alpha test.

I bet right now 100,000 people are running Longhorn and Microsoft is collecting data on errors that occur.

Ummm...yes you can!
I was on the Windows 98 beta team, Windows 2000, Windows XP and now on my third Service Pack beta team. (soon to be on the Office 11 team).
Each time i was on an OS team, they made it QUITE clear that part of my beta tester agreement was to NOT distribute the code i was using.

He downloaded an illegal copy as I am sure he is not a tester, now he wants help here?
That's like asking.."I broke into a bank and stole some cash..how do i spend the money because I think it might be marked..."

LOL!

Also another point I have, he lists several "major problems".
Well, DUH. Maybe because it is an alpha version?
Plus, he even wonders about "fully coquering the activation issue..." which to me sounds awfully 'warez'/illegal. I suppose maybe one could say he was brave enough to bring it up here at all that he was using this illegally.

One might, but I am not one. I tend to agree with the stupid assessment...

Who cares about piracy, I have no sympathy for any multi billion dollar corporation. Society is moving more and more towards seperating the haves from the have-nots, with information being the factor that is used to differentiate the two. Blindly agreeing with this methodology is short-sighted at best, dangerous at worst.

But back to this thread, well, don't you know what alpha means? There are going to be lots of problems, and there's nothing you can do about it unless you get in on an official tester spot, or get a job coding with MS. Good luck.
