Coffee mugs...to clean or to leave?

So I've thought of this lately and decided to see what ATOT's take on it was. The question is, do you clean your coffee mug after you've drank out of it or do you leave it once you're done and just keep re-filling it for days on end?

I remember talking to my friend who is in the Navy and he mentioned that one day some junior enlisted person was cleaning up the chief's mess and cleaned all their coffee cups. The chiefs were furious because they said that the coffee tasted better when their cups were not washed. I find it hard to believe, but ya never know.

I usually clean mine at the end of the day, re-fill up to that point. I can maybe see the chiefs' point; once I used my thermos (which usually holds Chai Tea) as a water bottle, and the chai tea residue got into the water. So I had chai flavored water, which was actually pretty good.

If it's only a day or two I will just re-fill. Now if its like a week or two and its caked on there, I'll wash it.

I have heard that cleaning your coffee mug (and pot) with soap does alter the taste. With that said, I don't drink coffee regular enough to have a dedicated cup, so I either use the Styrofoam ones at work, or a mug at my house, which is cleaned pretty much whenever dishes are done and it has been used. Likely, after about a day.

Clean it after each use, otherwise, enjoy the taste of ass when you do use it (even if you clean it 1st).

I usually forget to clean them, but don't drink coffee every day in the office. I typically will clean them just before use...if not to clean the coffee out, to clean the dust out.

I just rinse all my dishes with boiling water right after. Way faster and cheaper than a dishwasher. Best to have a quick source of boiling water, but such systems can be had for $50 or less.

Use, instant boil, put away.

Boiling right after using makes sure everything comes off super fast and easy...and sanitary for bonus points. Funny thing is everybody I know with a dishwasher has filthy dishes with spots streaks and chunks of food and other crap still stuck on. Even the rich people I know with thousand dollar "smart" fancy stainless steel dishwashers with expensive pre-wash soaps and drying agents.

Most dishwashers are worthless. I know the higher end ones are better, but there is no reason to pay $5,000 to avoid scrubbing dishes for all of 15 minutes. Either my GF or I do the dishes right after cooking / eating. It is quick (as there aren't a lot of dishes) and isn't annoying. Except, when I make pizza. For some reason I am like Lebron James and throw flour all over the place...

hot water rinse and leave out on the counter to dry, day-to-day... toss it in the dishwasher whenever I happen to be doing a load anyways and have room to spare (we usually only run the dishwasher once or twice/week)

disposable cups at work.

You must either eat really weird food or never have used a decent dishwasher...

11 months of the year, I could probably live without a dishwasher... but it's a life saver in the holidays when I'm baking a dozen different types of cookies and using hundreds of different measuring spoons/cups.

still, even on a regular day basis, it's nice to be able to just rinse off my plates, toss them in the dishwasher, and forget about them.

I am going to go with the latter. Every dishwasher I have had was a piece of crap. I had to wash everything before it went in, which defeats the purpose. Why not spend the extra 3-4 minutes washing them properly and be done with it?

The secret to the holidays is go to other people's houses. I cook every year, but I never host at my house. After spending all day cooking a feast, someone else can do the dishes. And they usually don't mind.

lol. My dad used to own a trailer park in Massieville, OH. Mom made a rare visit and washed the coffee mugs and it pissed off my dad to no end.

I rinse my work mug out after each use, then run it through the dishwasher on the weekend. If you're not doing at least that, I hope you drink it black. Cream that's been festering in the bottom turns pretty gross pretty quick.

At home I grab a clean one each morning.

I voted Clean It Daily, but this really isn't my case. My wife bought me seven 32 ounce mugs that I use daily, or rather one mug a day. It is my morning routine to make ~30 oz of coffee and drop a couple of shots of Irish Cream into the mug. Its breakfast!

But I do not re-use a dirty mug. That is disgusting and maybe even unhealthy.

I've known several "professional coffee drinkers" who refused to wash their coffee mugs/cups...claiming it tasted better once it "grew" a ring. Personally, I want my coffee cup washed daily. (or at a minimum, rinsed well)

Is it normal for people to have their "own" mugs at work? Everywhere I have ever worked has had a cupboard/shelf full of mugs and when people are done with them, generally at the end of the day they are loaded into a dishwasher and cleaned. Then the next morning someone will empty the dishwasher and put the mugs back in the cupboard/shelf for people to use again. You just grab which ever clean mug you like.

I never use any kind of beverage glass/cup/mug more than once without washing it.

I have 8 identical coffee mugs that I use, which go in the dishwasher after each use.

I clean it after each coffee, and by clean, I mean a quick rinse in the sink.

Once in a while I'll bring it home to pass it through the dishwasher.
