Is it normal for people to have their "own" mugs at work? Everywhere I have ever worked has had a cupboard/shelf full of mugs and when people are done with them, generally at the end of the day they are loaded into a dishwasher and cleaned. Then the next morning someone will empty the dishwasher and put the mugs back in the cupboard/shelf for people to use again. You just grab which ever clean mug you like.

The only place I ever worked at with communal dishes was at my parents' business. Granted only five people worked in the office including myself.

Where I work now, they supply paper coffee cups. They've got this fancy machine in the cafeteria that does all sorts of drinks. Espresso, lattes, cappuccinos, flavoured coffee. I have a travel mug I use. Going through all those paper ones just seemed wasteful.

Most dishwashers are worthless. I know the higher end ones are better, but there is no reason to pay $5,000 to avoid scrubbing dishes for all of 15 minutes. Either my GF or I do the dishes right after cooking / eating. It is quick (as there aren't a lot of dishes) and isn't annoying. Except, when I make pizza. For some reason I am like Lebron James and throw flour all over the place...

lol what, you don't have to pay $5000 for a good dishwasher.

I got in some trouble for washing cups as a kid working a summer job at a Navy recruiting office. Apparently it is some sort of badge of honor in the Navy if your coffee cup is all nasty and stained inside.

I could see cleaning it if you add pussy shit to it, like cream and sugar.. or just about anything else.
If you are a man who drinks it black there is no reason to clean it daily. I rinse it out everyonce in a while.

I rinse my coffee cup and wash the rim where I have contacted it, not because of the coffee (I drink it black) but because of me. I'm an organic being with countless bacteria in my face, shedding epithelials all over the damn place.

Between refills, i do not clean it or rinse it. After use, i rinse it to be clean enough that no coffee residue is present and wash it later or i wash it immediately, when doing the dishes.

yea no shit, good ones can be had for well under a grand

really nice ones top out at like 2k, yes you can get even more expensive ones if you get a commercial one for your house but that's massive overkill

I clean mine once every couple months or so. My travel mug gets rinsed under hot water every month; mostly due to the movable ring that allows funk to collect, and I work in dirty environments. I wash my makers about twice a year. Otherwise, they just get rinsed before use.

Oh, and fuck automatic dishwashers.

So I've thought of this lately and decided to see what ATOT's take on it was. The question is, do you clean your coffee mug after you've drank out of it or do you leave it once you're done and just keep re-filling it for days on end?

I remember talking to my friend who is in the Navy and he mentioned that one day some junior enlisted person was cleaning up the chief's mess and cleaned all their coffee cups. The chiefs were furious because they said that the coffee tasted better when their cups were not washed. I find it hard to believe, but ya never know.

This is a Navy tradition, usually involves the Captain.
A well seasoned cup signifies seniority.

I keep my cup well seasoned

I think it makes good sense for someone living alone or with a partner to do dishes by hand. It's humble and minimalist, and while it might be questionable whether it uses more water or not depending on technique, it certainly uses less energy.

I have heard that cleaning your coffee mug (and pot) with soap does alter the taste.
Where do you even find soap? Use dish detergent. If it's not got too much god-awful fragrance, it'll rinse right out.

Soap will leave residue, that will stay on there without very hot water rinsing it off.

I rinse with warm water at least once a day, and wash as needed (with Dawn--accept no substitutes*). Letting it go too long makes it nasty tasting, but washing is a chore, due to having to rinse out enough of the detergent to not smell or taste any of it.

* Well, I know Joy and Clorox Greensworks don't clean well, and are harder to rinse off, but I'm not necessarily against competition, if any is truly as good...
