Coffee is better for you by far. Cola has zero benefits, other than taste.

Coffee actually has some antioxidants that are good for you.

I dunno. Usually whenever I've had coffee I get the visit from Mr. Turtle not too soon afterwards, but then again I only drink coffee once in a blue moon. Either that or a slight tummy ache. I'm definitely pushing my luck though, as I've just had a second cup...

Weird beard. I get the tummy ache if I drink soda. We're opposites!

Like in Unbreakable?

However unreal it may seem, we are connected, you and I. We're on the same curve, just on opposite ends.

At last, I have found my arch-nemesis!

same goes for stuff like powerade and gatorade. you NEED that sugar, it's part of a balanced package of salts and sugars that help keep you hydrated and provide a small burst of extra energy. and if you are drinking powerade, likely you are using that sugar, or are merely regaining if you are like me and drink sports drinks AFTER I'm finished working out (due to not being able to drink things while doing PT in the morning, besides water from a water fountain inbetween things).

Yeah, I love it when people demonstrate shock at how many calories are in "ENERGY drinks" or "ENERGY bars". You're supposed to consume those things if you're active and need the energy, not if you're sitting in your cubicle neffing on ATOT!

Still, the studies go back and forth on whether coffee is overall good or overall bad for you, but there's no debate on soda.

you need to keep in mind what kind of sugar it is too, High Fructose = Bad, natural occurring sugar in fruit= not bad in moderation

I feel your pain, though. Trying to cut down myself after being berated repeatedly by my dentist...

Yeah, about the sugar I just found this info:

Coca-Cola owns both Coke® and Minute Maid®
juices, so they are happy to sell either of these
beverages in schools. Kids don't care whether
they drink a pop or juice because they both taste
good. That is, juice has the same and often
more sugar than soft drinks. A 12-ounce can or
bottle of Coke® contains 9 teaspoons of sugar
(equal to 39 grams of carbohydrate). The same
amount of unsweetened apple juice has at least 10
teaspoons of sugar (equal to up to 46 grams of
carbohydrate). Unsweetened orange juice
contains the same amount of sugar as a cola. A
?sports drink? such as Gatorade® Thirst
Quencher has 5 teaspoons of sugar and
Powerade® Regular has 7 teaspoons, but
Gatorade® Energy Drink has about 19 teaspoons
of sugar, and a whopping 310 calories, in that 12-
ounce bottle. Water from the water fountain has
no sugar and zero calories.

IIRC Coke hasn't had sugar in it in the US in a long time. High Fructose Corn Syrup... bleh.

Coffee (or tea) is much better for you than cola. I lost a lot of weight by quitting soda, cutting back on juice, and switching to tea and coffee as beverages of choice. I prefer tea to soda anyway on basis of flavor and thirst quenching.

it might, the laxitive/diuretic stuff only really affects coffee n00bs. regular drinkers are highly resistant to such effects.

cola does nothing for me in the morning. Coffee is my only chance to make it to work alive.

I drink Vitamin Water Energy in the morning now. I used to drink 3 or 4 20oz. bottles of Coke a day. Vitamin Water has about half the sugar, no phosphoric acid, it's not carbonated, and you get a few vitamins in there too.

i wish that was the case sometimes. i've been drinking 1-3 cups per day for 5+ years and the diuretic effect kicks in after my first cup every morning.

as a stimulant, though, caffeine has no effect on me

One of my friends hasn't had a soft drink (cola, coffee, etc) in 9 years. He only drinks water and beer.

I wish I could do this, but I'm so used to drinking something sweet every now and then. I do try to stick to diet drinks when possible.

To answer your question, coffee is better than cola. But keep in mind that you can get more caffine from coffee depending on how it's brewed and how the beans are roasted. Dark roasts like Espresso, actually have less caffine in the coffee, but since it's more concentrated you get the kick and the burnt flavor. Lighter roasts have the most caffine, but are usually not as concentrated.

Best thing you can do is try to kick the sugar. Look for soft drinks sweetened with Splenda and try to use Splenda in your coffee. Diabetes isn't something to play around with...

I voted coffee before reading the thread, but you guys make good points about cola. When I think "coffee" I typically relate it to lots of cream and sugar or some crazy espresso mocha grande omg I will be awake for a week kind of thing from starbucks. Black coffee with a little sugar is probably better than cola.

lol I think hazardous is bit harsh to use here. It's just soda. When I see "hazardous" I imagine shooting heroin or a collapsing bridge.

sorry, but either your teacher used a fake-easily-dissolvable tooth, or you invented that memory. coke can't cause anywhere near that amount of damage within that time span.

Snopes

(i think there was a mythbusters episode on this as well)

Same here. I've been drinking it for almost 5 years now. If I have a big cup of joe on an empty stomach I'm in for some intestinal fireworks about 20 minutes later.
