Heh, MDF weighs a ton and properly framed is very strong. It makes a good table top when veneered or given an appropriate finish. Unfortunately the crap they use in making furniture is not much better than building with graham crackers.
Interesting. I'm looking at wiki'a article about MDF and hardboard, and it looks like the board I put my laptop on is made from hardboard. I never knew what that material was, but it has a nice strong feel to it. I would jump at the chance to have furniture made from that material.

Hard to tell from the picture but if the edgeing is solid wood you can sand and refinish that pretty easy.

But if its a mix-wood product (particleboard type) then you can fill it with wood filler and try to stain it back. Will not match 100% but better than that.

Real wood (or metal) is probably good to have if you have kids. My parents had a real wood coffee table and I remember being hurt pretty bad when horsing around and bumping into it. The table is indestructible.

Some doctors recommend not having coffee tables when you have small kids for this reason.

Not all Ashley is shit, and I suspect the OPs story may not be 100% factual..

I have an Ashley couch, I was careful to get a solid wood frame model, and I have had no issues with it.

I have a huge cheap particle board desk, and never use coasters. Over 10 years, there's 1 or 2 spots that swelled a bit from water, but nothing catastrophic.

So we bought a new coffee table/end table set at Ashley Furniture a few weeks ago to replace our old ones, during a store closing sale. Fast forward to last night, my wife and I were watching TV and her cup of water was knocked over, spilled onto the coffee table. Cleaned it up, watched some more TV, went to bed. No big deal, right?

Got up this morning, came downstairs, the entire front edge of the table is warped, and cracked. Un freaking real. We haven't even had this thing for a month. Our store here is now closed, so I can't talk to anyone there. So i call the 800 customer service number, talked to someone who was going to send out a "craftsman" to inspect and repair the furniture. Not sure how he's going to repair it but whatever, I said ok, and asked if he can't fix this, what my next option was. She put me on hold, transferred me to Andrew in "Customer Affairs", who proceeded to tell me they would do nothing, because I should not have had a drink on my coffee table. WTF

He told me that they don't recommend putting drinks on your coffee table ,and any damage was my own fault. Sure, it was an accident, and yes it got wet, which admittedly was not their fault. I asked him though what kind of coffee table do they sell that once it gets wet, is ruined? It isn't like I took it swimming, I spilled some water, cleaned it up, and expected that to be the end. He pretty much got snotty with me and said there's nothing to be done, and he's the only one there today so that's it. Got his manager's number and will call monday, but I'm pretty upset at all this. Especially after not having it even a month.

I don't understand how any furniture store/company can sell you a coffee table and then not back it up by saying "we don't recommend putting drinks on it". It's a freaking coffee table.

Anyone have any suggestions? Could we dispute this on our credit card? We put it on our Slate card. Or am I really wrong here and SOL?

Thanks

Call the store on monday and see if they will do anything.

Did you miss the part where I said our store is closed? Hence the store-closing sale.

And my story is not fishy or non-factual. I don't need to make up stories to tell to ATOT about my coffee table, I do have better things to do than that. I'm mad I spent money on a coffee table that can't hold up to a spill. I plan on calling back tomorrow but if they can't do anything for me then I guess it wouldn't hurt to take Marlins advice and attempt to sand/refinish it myself. What do I have to lose?

Your mom and popped collar must be so proud.

I'm female so the popped collar reference doesn't really apply.

Honestly, I get that some people don't give a shit about their furniture or living places and don't mind if their stuff gets beat up on; I've been there when I was younger. "Oh, spilled something on the carpet? Whatever."

But as I've gotten older and saved, I enjoy making my house nice. I don't freak out about my stuff (dog knocked over a glass of wine yesterday; oxyclean!) but basic manners does say that you act appropriately to not damage other people's belongings when you're at their house. And a lot of people don't pay attention to that. Not putting your feet on the furniture or glasses on wood and offering to take off your shoes when you come in the house (we're a shoes-on house but I always offer when I visit someone else's place) is just basic.

I'd have to agree. Unless it's completely untreated crap wood that sucked up water like a sponge you shouldn't be able to get the wood to swell because a few minutes of water from a spill.

OP probably thought they got all the water and it sat there all day and night and the next time they looked at it, it was warped. Even crap would couldn't warp just from some quick contact with water.

Seriously though, you bought a cheap coffee table to begin with and have started this thread and the work needed to get it replaced.

I am thinking you want a personal army.

I have a very cheap coffee table (paper veneer type), it looks great and I have spilled stuff on it. If you cleaned it up right away like you said in the OP you wouldn't have a swelling issue.

I am betting either a glass was knocked over or full of ice that sweated out all night.

Just FYI, Ashley Furniture is #1 because it's cheap.

Sometimes you get luck and get something decent, other times you get a total piece of crap.

Yup. I've never built anything bigger than a toothpick bridge out of wood, and even I can tell that their quality is pretty bad.

We got a coffee table from Ashley several months ago. It's been fine so far. We try to use coasters when setting drinks down. Have had a couple of spills, but nothing has happened to the wood.

I'll echo the sentiment that ashley furniture is crap. Recently purchased a 3 seat leather reclining sofa from Ashley for around $1100. Main reason we picked this furniture is because of its look and contoured seats. The showroom model felt pretty solidly built. We took delivery a few days ago and the seats arent contoured at all. Also the sofa felt a lot flimsier. Took a look underneath to find that the frame is built out of OSB...WTF?! Also the leather is stapled to the OSB. Im sure it's going to start coming off soon. The whole sofa just feels cheap. Im convinced that Ashley builds their showroom furniture better than the ones they deliver to the customers.

Should've just gone with Berkline :\

Dude chill. I didn't miss that part. I just interpreted it as it's closed for the night or weekend.

What do you expect when you buy cheap shitty furniture?

I don't think you have much to rant about. You bought a piece of shit, and it turns out it's a piece of shit....
