Just read from another site that the COHOnline page now says the game is being shutdown.

As could probably still be found on these forums, I was very unsure of what they were trying to bring new to the game with this release and it appears the only thing they were trying to achieve was to get $$$$ from those willing to spend to be more competitive. And it seems that thankfully for us players/consumers the system failed magnificently if the plug is being pulled so soon after going open beta.

I had only recently installed the online version, and while it has only been about a year or so since I played much COH, I did play through the original and first expansion campaigns and many hours in multiplayer and found the online version fairly awkward with its way and dividing up the commander abilities based on career rank vice in game rank.

Does make me want to go install the final expansion though to give it a whirl.

I may be missing something, but that looks like a standard message to replay when something is simply coming out of beta.

I don't see anything in there that the entire game is being shut down and won't be released.

This is what they posted;

Blue's News is reporting the end of the Company of Heroes Online experiment. *

The Company of Heroes Online Website announces that Relic will be shutting down this online installment in their World War II real-time strategy series on March 31, 2011. As of today they are no longer selling COHO Cash, and they urge players who have purchased any to spend it in game before the game's closure, as their COHO Beta Closure FAQ notes that they will not be offering any refunds, referring to their policy that refunds are at their "sole and absolute discretion," which they are obviously not exercising here. Company of Heroes Online entered open beta testing exactly six months ago, where it has remained ever since, and in spite of them describing its run as "several very successful months," their answer to the question of whether they plan to launch a full version of COHO sounds pessimistic: "We are still working on our plans for the Company of Heroes franchise and are not ready to discuss details yet. We will be leveraging all the data and feedback the Company of Heroes Online Beta generated." They offer beta participants their thanks as well as a code to purchase a copy of Company of Heroes Gold Edition from the THQ online store for $4.99 USD, noting that an upcoming patch will bring multiplayer improvements from COHO to the original Company of Heroes game and expansions. This forum offers Company of Heroes beta patch notes, and they say to stay tuned for a release date for a new patch. In an interview last November, producer Greg Wilson discussed a steep learning curve as an obstacle to new players trying to get started in Company of Heroes Online.

The whole pay to gain advantages scheme that is infecting competitive online games needs to die. I am a major fan of the regular COH games, and I'm glad to hear this news.

+1.

Kids today ... no need to invest my valuable TIME in this when I can BUY an upgrade !!
Why, back in my day, we had to play in DOS and use memory managers to free up enough conventional RAM to run a game .. and get offa my virtual lawn !

I bought all of the CoH games on CD/DVD, and also bought them again on Steam (couldn't beat the price - bought a 2nd copy for LAN games) and I thought a free* online version of the game was a piss poor offering from THQ.

*-free to play, pay to play competitively.

COH = City of Heroes.

Company of Heroes = Company of Heroes.

Just like SC2 = Star Control 2, not Starcraft 2. Get it right people.

Company of Heroes > City of Heroes

Hence, COH = Company of Heroes. :awe:
