Looks like newegg is now charging shipping for most of the items in their refurb section. Thats too bad as the free shipping made me more willing to take a chance on an item that may not work or come with all accessories.

Looks like the change occured in the last couple of hours as I was able to order a refurb Windows MCE 2004 remote with free shipping.

Yes, very cold. Refurbs such as optical drives are not worth buying when you can get a new one for $3-5 more.

Looks like this was added >>>> Special FedEx Saver Shipping $5.00. You're right, this was not found in the refurbs a few hours ago. :disgust:

Can't say I blame 'em. They're out to make money. Almost all their refurbs sell out immediately after posting. Laws of supply and demand says they need to raise prices.

Free shipping helped create the demand. Without free shipping the demand will drop. More people were willing to take a risk with NE returns/refurbs with free shipping.

Maybe they can actually make sure they work before they sell them if they're going to raise the prices.

I've had nothing but good experiences with Newegg but it might serve them better simply to raise the base prices of the refurbs and keep the "free" shipping. Glad I bought what I needed before the change.

so lets see...they charge for shipping, for a 'refurb' item that isnt even tested by them (to see if it works). that may or may not include all the parts and accessories.
and if it doesnt work, then you have to ship it back to them at your cost.

so what is the advantage? in the worst case, you would probably end up paying almost, if not, the same amount as you would for a new retail product.

Not only did they add the $5 shipping charge, but they didn't change the asking prices, so the price has actually gone up $5 that you won't be refunded if the refurbs don't work out. The cost of receiving a bad refub is now at least $10 when you consider return shipping!

Hopefully it's a mistake that will go away.

Probably not going away IMO. NewEgg doesn't really care about selling refurbs to end-users from what I understand. We're too picky.

Semi-cold. You know you're taking a risk when buying their refurbs(I've only been bilked twice), shipping just makes you second guess it a bit more. Although I probably won't second guess that much if I want it

well...

the thing is they changed it, so that they pay for shipping it back if its broken. i've had quite a few things that were broken, or didnt come with so many accessories that it was useless. i will probably buy less cheap stuff. most of the refurb prices are not even that good anymore. video cards especially are not even that cheap.

They are also charging shipping on items that previously had free shipping ...line the black and silver 8x Nec dvd recorder drive. Free shipping still on the beige, but the others alsmot always had free shipping, even when not on sale.

It's a given that they probably don't make much money on refurbs. But like the FAR stuff at Bestbuy that they only carry 3 of per store, it's a draw. It draws people to shop there and also buy other, higher margin items. Even if its not part of their first order, knowing that you got a good deal from them and having a (hopefully) good experience there will bring you back for other things.

This isn't a huge deal and most of the refurbs are still good deals even with another $5 tacked on. But if it hurts sales of refurbs it could also end up hurting their other sales as well. So if they don't care about refurbs, they should.

Since when will they cover return shipping? I'd like to see a link to their site where they state that. All I've ever been told by their customer service reps is that I have to pay the return shipping.

I say quit complaining. Sure, they were giving us a free ride on refurbs. I HIGHLY doubt this will effect people's appetite for Hot Deals.

It seems as if they are charging shipping now on almost everything refurb or not, where previously, most items (at least smaller ones) were free and the occasional one had a shipping charge. Has anyone else noticed this? Curious.

I noticed this and am more than a little annoyed.

I had a mobo in my cart with free shipping, went to order it and there was the $5 shipping charge.

I sent them an email, but if I don't get free shipping I'll pass.

It seems that way to me. I just ordered a DVD rom and a floppy drive and was charged 9 dollars for shipping.
