You got to be kidding ! Is this a new policy ?

Let's piss off some more of the few who still like the U.S.

<CLIP>
According to a State Department transcript, Powell told Phoenix: "There is only one China.
Taiwan is not independent. It does not enjoy sovereignty as a nation, and that remains our policy, our firm policy."

The US has pretty much acknowledged a one China policy ever since Nixon formally recognized the mainland government as the real China.

Once regarded as a man of credibility and integrity, what happened...

Interesting to see how Bush or Kerry will engage China, as it is the emerging superpower. Should the effort be on putting up obstacles, or building a better relationship?

Would you like to start world war 3 over Taiwan? All they do is build cheap toys and I'm not going to die over that.

Same as it's been since 1972-

" The U.S. side declared: The United States acknowledges that all Chinese on either side of the Taiwan Strait maintain there is but one China and that Taiwan is a part of China. The United States Government does not challenge that position. It reaffirms its interest in a peaceful settlement of the Taiwan question by the Chinese them-selves. "

From here-

http://usinfo.org/docs/basic/shanghai_e.htm

Powell is just actively promoting the position we've had for 30 years... Blame Nixon- probably the smartest thing he ever did...

the US policy has always been to be as vague as possible. This doesn't sound as vague as possible.

According to a State Department transcript, Powell told Phoenix: "There is only one China. Taiwan is not independent. It does not enjoy sovereignty as a nation, and that remains our policy, our firm policy."

That was a departure from the U.S. government's longtime "one China policy," a purposely fuzzy approach that merely "acknowledges" people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait agree there is one China. Washington also insists differences should be settled peacefully and in recent years has emphasized that the Taiwanese people should have a say in the matter.
quoted from the article.

Right, but it sounds better if they bash the Bush Administration..

Every prior administration since Nixon (as least as far as I know) has NOT suggested that Taiwan rejoin a communist China.

So, Bush is. Why?

The Chinese government has been progressively going back on all of their promises to Hong Kong to allow them to keep a freely elected government and freedom of speech and to stay out of heavy handed interference in their economy. Seems they have a lot in common with the Bush administration. :|

so when the US sold Taiwan those Aegis crusiers and all the other stuff they were really selling them to China, good to know that US holds China in such high regard and trusts them for the most high tech military equipment they have.

Because of our dependence on China, if they stop buying the dollar, it tanks. THEY have the position of power now, not the US, and it has nothing to do with military strength.....

BULLSHIT !

We fought against Comunist China in Korea AND in Viet Nam.

Why in the hell is this Administration willing to roll over for the Chinese Communists now ?
Is the perceived 'Worth' of our dollar to Bush's Administration backers for profit worth more than
the thousands of American troops that have died to perserve this countries security second rate ?

Don't tell me about this crooked and corrupt government's stance against 'Terrorism' - it's fake.

I agree. However, Bush's wink, nod and handshake deal with China seems fishy at this juncture.

I was trying to convey to BarneyFife that he's got some misconceptions about the Taiwanese economy.

It's not the perceived worth of the dollar, it's the absolute need we have come to depend on for continiung our lavish deficit spending.

Not so much...they COULD hurt us, but if we stop buying Chinese products, they are screwed. There is only one American market after all, and we can go elsewhere to buy our cheap stuff. Trust me, from an economic standpoint, they need us more than we need them.

We want Taiwan to be fearful of china so that it will need to buy our weapon systems. If we say we will be taiwan bitch we will end up giving billions of aid to taiwan. This way we get to make money off them.
