(There really is no section for this)

Due to there being a slight unorganization at work, Im planning to deploy a intranet so our employees can jot down notes, post emails, post files, etc. so different employees in different sections can access different stuff.

Marketing should for example be able to share emails of customers, prices they have given them, advertising material, etc.
Programming should be able to distribue files to themselves and tech support, share written code, etc.
Administration should be able to jot down finances (non personal, just numbers of revenuve and expenses)
Tech support should jot down the hours they did, what they did, etc.

All of course sections would be controlled with security thru active directory.

What opinions are out there? I perfer a free implementation as I know there is no wish to implement a paid solution (trust me, Ive tried).

There is no free option.

Sure you could maybe find some piece of shareware/freeware to put on a local server. But then you'd have to do the install, configuration, and then the ongoing backup, support, and maintenance of it.

How much does an hour of your time cost your company? How many does it take to hit $100? Are you going to do less than that per month? Just pay the $99/month for friggin' Basecamp & Highrise or some similar SaaS solution. Hell Basecamp even gives you the first 2 months free.

Basecamp and Highrise are both as I see, cloud solutions. Not looking at that at all. Something that is on our servers.

I mentioned that what I projected did not include paid options. Ive looked at paid options and uptop isnt intrested.

And what I'm tying to explain to you is that there is no such thing as a not paid option.

To clarify, do you mean that the OP's company will pay for the software in employee hours spent configuring it, whether it's free or has to be paid for? Or are you also saying that there is no Free Software option for these tasks?

Again, it's only free if your time is worthless.

You company does pay you, right? And they pay for your benefits right?
Again, you are making no point at all.

For the company, you work for, do you do everything SaaS? Your DC, exchange, website, etc?
Think about it: You pay, lets say 200 for each of those services (actually, maintaing the service) a month and your salary is 500.
Yet you could have done it all yourself and your salary is 700 a month

First method: Your company is spending 8400 a year on a service.
Second method: Your company is spending the same exact money.

Its either cheaper and takes more time
or
More expensive but takes less time

How long it takes you to do it? Most SBS are more budget oriented than time oriented so they dont care (even though they should) about how long it takes them.

Offsiting things are basically paying someone to make changes (Im thinking of a website) when you can make things onsite yourself and "free".

Im glad that you find SaaS a great alternative and there are situations where it is and you cant spend time on implementing X or Y. I can. I don't want a SaaS or anything similar. I can't make that any more clearer. If you choose not to understand that, then please stopping giving me useless suggestions for what I am asking.

So you should probably stop saying "higher said no paid option" and instead say "higher says no hosted option"

And no, you'll never break even on the cost. Don't even try to make this silly argument.
