We keep getting collect calls from some guy in Wilson County Jail. We don't know what to do to get him to stop. Dialing the operator doesn't get us to a real person. I searched the net to see if we could call the jail, but there are 4 Wilson Counties nationwide. We don't have *69 or anything...Anyone have any ideas??

Well if you are lonely, start accepting the charges

You never know, that relationship with an inmate might save your life

He is using AT&T, but it isn't cheap. Jail/prison contracts are big business, cause the prisoners don't have much choice. ANyway, I still can't figure out what to do, since the phone company said they can do a call trace, but only on calls from within my service area, and it's not from within my service area.

Does he have the right number (ie is he intentionally calling you?). If you've never accepted the charges accepting them once & telling him he's got the wrong person might work.

That's what I'd do.

Don't be a d!ck about it, just say you have the wrong number. Otherwise he'll probably keep calling you just to make you mad.

I did. Well, I didn't accept the call, but I said wrong number. Then he called back, and when they leave the opportunity for him to say his name, he said, "you'll do." Then the next time he said, "just give me a chance." The next one'll be "I'm going to kill you in your sleep."

I got a call like that once, I just hung up. Never got another again. I think you should accept it and tell him if he continues to call. Maybe someone gave him the wrong number.

Maybe you should accept one, just to tell the guy you are not the party he is trying to call. He's probably desparately trying to get someone he knows to post his bail, and probably can't remember the number. If it was me, I'd probably set him on the right track, taking one call from him and maybe even helping him find the number to the people he is looking for.

In that case don't accept the charges and if the phone company says they can't do anything about it then change your number.

I am a Police Officer and I can tell you this is a common scam . They try to make collect calls from the jail and have you accept the charges to your number . " Just say NO"

How would anyone benefit from this?

Not sure how Jails work but my Father-in-law is in an FCI.. Federal Corrections Institute. And when he calls a voice says Press 1 to accept or 2 to decline call. Once you decline one call he can't call us anymore so I have to be very certain I hit the right button..

Something like this happend to my grandmother. In one week she got as many as 50 calls from people in the county jail. I called the phone company on her behalf and we had all county jail numbers blocked from calling. Then a week or two later, we saw a news report on how inmates were calling random people and asking them to punch in a set of numbers. Once done, this code of numbers allows the inmate to use your phone line to make phone calls and have them end up on your bill.

If your serious about these calls I would definitely look into having the phone company block all jail numbers from contacting your phoneline.

Only drawback is if I happen to get myself thrown in the pokey for a night...cant call granny to come bail me out.

The jailbird figures that if you're stupid enough to accept a (long distance - even worse) collect call from someone in jail who you don't know, then you've passed his idiot test and may just as likely do something else for them, like believe whatever story they cook up and send them money or worse.

As soon as he said he was going to kill you, you should have called the cops.

How about getting caller-id and not picking up the phone when that number calls you? Its much easier than changing your phone number since you have tell all those you know of your new number.

Just call the phone company and see if they can block collect calls from that location.
