College Discounts on Vista?

I figure if I can score a discount on a copy of Vista Ultimate I'll go for it. At a full retail price of $399, I decide to be a smart consumer and do some shopping. I have seen many threads where some colleges offer substantial discounts for various software products.
So I ask my nephew to check with his school, CUNY Queens College. They don't carry it in their bookstore, but sent him to an online "affiliate". The cost? $399! WTF!?
I thought college students were poor and downtrodden, and needed a variety of welfare programs to get through a semester?

i talked to a friend that told me my alma mater (texas) won't be getting the discounted copies until april.

*edit* but if you work for a department you can already get a copy for $10 (ultimate edition)

A poor and downtrodden college student has no need for Vista Ultimate.

Seriously, give them several months, you'll be able to pick up the cheaper versions of Vista for cheaper.

depends. My university seems to only have it for the CS department.

You can get the home premium upgrade for $70 but that's about it.

We can get Vista for free through MSDNAA, but they only offer the Business edition. It was the same for XP - you could only download the Professional edition, not Home or MCE.

Also you had to be an engineering major.

There is a thread over in Hot Deals with some links to academic pricing. IIRC you can get XP Premium upgrade for around $200.00. That is about what the OEM version costs from what I have seen.

Ohio State is getting Vista Ultimate in April, and sounds like it'll be around $40.
