I also prefer the NFL but I don't know why you found it hard to watch. It was a back and forth game for 3 quarters before OSU ran away with it.

You had an epic running performance from Elliot and while Mariota wasn't as good as I was expecting he still had over 300 yards passing and two TDs. And watching a 3rd string QB keep his poise and deliver a solid performance was impressive.

It was better than 3 out of the 4 NFL Wildcard weekend games for sure

Don't know, it just felt very sloppy and the throws looked awful. At the same time it also felt a lot slower. Of course I have no attachment to the game, I've only watched a handful of College Football games and it's not like I have a team to follow, so maybe that's why I found it so dull and like it was taking forever; I swear the first quarter took a full hour.

Though most of the accolades seem to go to Jones and Eliot, the real heroes for OSU are the offensive linemen -- they've been absolutely fantastic over the past few games, opening massive holes for the RB and buying time for the QB to throw from a clean pocket.

Absolutely, and the D line played a great game too.

Props to Ed Warinner and Larry Johnson for getting the guys in the trenches ready.

Also, remember this is Urban Meyer we're talking about here...he doesn't have the cleanest past behind him and has been known to blatantly look the other way and obfuscate information when needed.

I'll bet he'd even let players get away with murder if he could.

College games run about 10-12 minutes more than NFL games with different rules on clock stoppages. I think the big issue is TV time-outs, the more important a game the longer the breaks run. They probably bumped every break up 30 seconds last night to squeeze in one extra commercial.

This is also due to the refs. Frankly they're just not as competent and swift. Hell it took them 10 minutes to determine the spot after reversing the first quarter Oregon fumble call. They sure got it right, but gdamn if it didn't take forever.

I prefer the NFL to the NCAA for sure. Lots of reasons. At the top of the list is just the shear unbridled corruption at every level, from the "student athlete" thugs that would never see a college campus were it not for their athletic talent, to the coaches, presidents, and trustees that use them. Most good teams are one or two key injuries away from mediocrity, so I just don't see a huge difference between a #5 team and any given unranked team. But the kicker for me is the personal investment so many idiots have in these teams. My idiot brother in law never spent a moment at Ohio State, but damn if he isn't intensely focused on every High School Varsity and JV game around trying to figure out who OSU's next star CB is going to be. And if OSU had lost last night, you'd find him on a bridge this morning contemplating whether or not life was still worth it.

People's identities are so tied to college games... I just don't get it. Sure you see that in the NFL, too, but this is next level shit.

I think all sports/teams have psychotic fans.
There is usually something mentally wrong with them when they get so tied up in a team that they have little to no direct effect on.

Even if you grew up near and even attended the university, the kids are being recruited from Florida, Texas, Alabama, etc. They aren't even from here!

I'm all for rooting for your team, but don't get too emotionally tied to it.
It's just an entertainment business, not an identity.

Exactly, and that's just what I don't get. I actually went to OSU, and while I'd prefer to see them win, the football program's success bears no effect on my degree, education, or my future. It's their success, not mine, and the majority of the team got plucked from places far away.

rough estimate using CTRL-F. didn't actually count.

It appears it's actually higher than that as some in state hometowns omit the State.

The reason I ask is because I know quite a few Ohio State fans. Most are rabid enough to either a) know or b) care enough about the argument to go count (and then know). Actually this seems to be a quality found in most college football super fans.

Most OSU fans probably don't know CTRL-F though so you're definitely in the upper echelon there.

Wow, OSU really dominating.
That was the best thing I can say about the game, that the outcome wasn't contrary to the play of the teams. OSU dominated the line of scrimmage, particularly on offense. They continually opened mammoth holes for Elliott to run through, they provided great pass protection for Jones much of the time. They were the better team. OU had players unavailable due to the suspensions. I wonder what the outcome would have been if that hadn't been the case, but the outcome of the game itself I can't argue with. Hell, OU got 4 turnovers IIRC, and they still got their butts kicked.

Ezekiel went biblical on their ass.
It was the O line, he was in the secondary before anybody touched him on those big runs.

Part of that was Ezekiel too. He's very good at a quick turn of the shoulders or bending out of the grasp until he's clear of the tackler.

The second line was terrible at tackling, which helped him look great. Big holes plus missed tackles had him looking like some kind of Jim Brown. That will stop once he hits the NFL though. =)

I was actually rather impressed with the game and the whole process. It was entertaining and OSU proved they deserved to be in the top 4 and ultimately proved they could finish their games.

umm, Ohio State has 69 players from Ohio on the 110 man roster.
And what about the stars?

JT Barrett - Texas
Cardale Jones - Ohio
Ezekial Elliot - Missouri
Joey Bosa - Florida
Jeff Heuerman - Florida
Noah Spence - Pennsylvania
Devin Smith - Ohio
Michael Thomas - California

More like 25%.

Hmmm... :hmm:

I'm a big OSU fan myself. You just need to realize that the old days of college football are gone. This is a professional sport where the main reasons the stars go to a school is their likelihood of success. (coach, size of program, facilities, weather, etc)
OSU is an anomaly on the weather due to their size, status and coach.
Mich and ND were too... but that seems to have faded.

Notre Dame has tougher acedemic standards, so its going to be harder for them to maintain their program.

that ship sailed ages ago when ND accepted prop 86 students or whatever it was.

D1 programs will take anyone academically if they are desired enough athletically.

tutoring and very careful selection of classes will carry the kid through his eligibility.

Can you be more specific? I don't recall ND lowering their acedemic standards for athletes. Typically Stanford, Northwestern, Notre Dame, Cal, George Tech, etc, have higher requirements for their athletes. I think I read Cal was requiring recruits to have a 3.0 high school gpa in order to be admitted.

The number I was looking for was 48.

Notre Dame won a National Title with Tony Rice at QB, who was famous for being ND's first prop 48 recruit.

I remember reading an article about him at the time where fans wouldn't want their kids to look up to him, because he was "dumb" by Notre Dame standards. All that seemed to go away once he was winning.
