Yeah, I know...without football scholarships lots of people wouldn't be able to go to college... BUT, college should be about edumakation, not muscles...(or about the muscle between your ears)

I'm NOT anti-sports...but IMO, college sports programs are a huge waste of $$$.

I'm not sure your facts are entirely straight. I'm by no means an authority on who most (or even many) schools do it, but I know that Penn State, for example, has a clear division between academics and athletics financially. Penn State University is a separate financial entity from Penn State Intercollegiate Athletics. Money can not be exchanged, i.e. tuition/grants do not go to sports, and football ticket sales do not go to academics.

Football programs at the major schools run a considerable profit.

Really? Most big college football teams make enough money to pay for themselves AND every other sports team at the university, and still have profit to go around.

Penn State, for example, only spends 16 million on football (probably a little more when everything is factored in), while it brings in over 53 million dollars.

Except when the sports programs are profitable.... They also bring recognition to some schools. Dare I say that winning the national championship of one of the most popular sports is likely to generate more attention than moving up in the US News ranking, unfortunately.

Example
the University of Texas is the nation's richest, and most profitable football program, with revenue of $53.2 million, and a profit of $38.7 million, during the fiscal year that ended in August, just as the current season was about to get underway.

Not to mention the money earned from Football goes to supporting all of the other, revenue losing sports, and gets more kids a scholarship.

second worst thing about college football behind the BCS

actually i almost have to agree with him, except that a 11-1 notre dame team without a credible win over a major opponent will have a tough time getting quite high enough in the polls unless there are no other 11-1 teams. if any team from the big10/pac10/big12/sec
is 11-1, they will get picked over notre dame and for good reason.

I will say that they are very likely to get a bcs game in which they will be competitive, however.

Iowa had an excellent finish last year with an absolute trouncing of South Carolina in their bowl game helping carry over the warm & fuzzies for the pollsters. They had one of the best rushing teams in the league and have a lot of talent returning.

That being said, I don't think they'll finish in the top 25, but they'll be close. Ferentz is amazing when it comes to finding talent in a bunch of nobodies.

Same with Ohio State. I am a die hard fan but I just don't see them doing it this year.

I'm in a hardcore Buckeye area. I rooted for PSU and almost got my ass beat at BWW's last year. I plan to repeat this risk this year

Yeh, that too

They lost their 5 games by a total of like 12 points. So they were in every single game they played.

Too much credit? The only thing they really lost of any consequence is the offensive line. We still have our best one too. Oklahoma for the past 5 years has always been able to pass block. We have 2 heisman candidates, plus a tight end who is freak of nature.

Our defense is going to be a beast this year too.

Many people are predicting a rematch of last years NCG.

You're right, but I just really despise pre-season polls has been better on paper for years now, but keeps choking or being outclassed in bowl games.

Then again, I haven't kept up with college football in general for about a year.

I'm going to all the damn Longhorn games, Texas/OU, and if when we make it, the National Championship. I will not settle for another bowl game. (That said, I will go to any bowl game the Longhorns play in.)

Well, they return a lot of valuable players from a team that went 9-4 (and if they didn't choke against MSU and Pitt could've went 11-2).

Probably a darkhorse in the Big Ten, but the schedule is just absolutely brutal this year. All tough Big Ten games on the road plus OOC games @ Iowa State and vs. Arizona.

Defense should be stout again (returning 8 from the 12th-ranked defense nationally). If Jewel Hampton can fill in near Shonn Greene's level the Hawks should be pretty good. I'm expecting somewhere around 9-3.

That was a BS game anyway, though. Pass interference?

lol what a joke

They've had a top 10 recruiting class four of the last five years. Last year they were around #20 but managed to land the #1 defensive player in the country. They have been building slowly, and should have a very solid offense. Possibly the best T in college football will be protecting a very good QB throwing to possibly the best WR tandem in the land. They are set at the FB/RB positions as well, and have a fantastic TE in 5-star recruit Rudolph. Their success will depend on the rest of the offensive line and the defense. With 18 returning starters, they are definitely worthy of a top 25 ranking. Now whether or not they will earn it on the field will be revealed shortly. Can we fast forward two weeks?
