College laptop: Macbook pro?

I'm trying to decide what laptop to get for college. I'm looking for a laptop that's lightweight, has a graphics card, and descent battery life. I'm not planning on bringing a desktop to college. Right now, the macbook pro 2.16ghz looks like it may be the best compromise between performance and portability, and playing games actually looks possible with bootcamp.

I'm not a big Mac user - I think the last Mac I used regularly was a Mac IIe - but I feel safer about software compatability since Apple released boot camp.

Anyone have any recommendations, advice, or warnings?

The MacBook is a sweet laptop, if you can afford it.
(I wish I could!)

AppleCare is STRONGLY reccomended. Apple has a very short warranty.

At the moment at least, bootcamp is not really usefull for stuff other than games. The biggest problem is the lackluster support of the Apple laptops integrated keyboard. Until this is fixed, the only way to get good reults is to use an external USB keyboard.

Running Windows in a Parallels virtual machine on the other hand works extremely well, except for the lack of 3D accelleration you can really do some work without any external peripherals to help you out.

So there should be no problem if you are willing to use OS-X as the machines primary OS - which is miles appart from the rotten filth known as classic Mac OS which was to be found on that Mac IIe (I once bought a used powermac out of curiosity, and sold it again really quickly because MacOS 8 was just a pile of trash compared to win2000 that I was running at the time). Once the Bootcamp drivers are final there would be no technical reason not to use Windows as the main OS on an Apple Laptop... but then why buy an Apple laptop?

Are you already enrolled in college? You might want to check out the once in a lifetime 20% discount that you get when you sign up for the Apple Dev. Connection - even if you don't do any coding. It's especially worth it when you plan to buy a high-end mac.

The 2.16 MBP is saweeht... I have had mine now for just over 2 Weeks and am loving it. It has replaced my old main rig (Athlon 2200+) very very well. Performance is really good - just spent the afternoon on the balcony of my appartment playing Oblivion, I overclocked (or "reclocked" if you will) the graphics and now Oblivion runs extremely well. Do get 2GB of RAM (not from apple though, order online!), and I really recommend getting an iCurve or a similar laptop stand if you are planning to use it on the desk of dorm regularly. I can also recommend the Logitech cordless desktop 530 for mac... but that is all optional. What isn't optional is a kensington lock when at college... BUY ONE! When I ordered my MBP with a kensington lock the sales guy commented that it was a smart idea as the reports of stolen Apple laptops are really on the rise - this was after I said I wanted the lock.

Thanks for your responses - they are very encouraging. If I go with the macbook, I'll definately get the extended warranty.

Wow! Thanks for mentioning the Apple Developer connection -- you may have saved me a few hundred dollars. The only downside of it is that the 3 year AppleCare is full price - $350 instead of the student price of $240. Do you think it would be possible to buy the laptop with the Developer connection discount and then buy a 3 year AppleCare through the educational shop?

Thanks,
Sam

If you're not an OSX user, why bother going for an expensive MacBook Pro? You can get a really nice Thinkpad T60 for about $1500-1600 with discrete graphics. Then you won't even have to screw around with Bootcamp and less than perfect compatibility with Windows. Plus, it comes with a 3-year warranty by default. It's something to think about.

OSX offers more in terms of stability and safety than Windows while offering more compatibility and ease of use than Linux. Sure, it's not perfect, but no OS is and IMO, OSX comes the closest (except games ).

And as a recent convert from Windows and Ubuntu, I'd have to say that OSX on my MacBookPro has worked out wonderfully for me. I do all of my software development and general web surfing in OSX and occasionally drop into Windows for gaming. I was at a LAN party this past weekend with a bunch of Windows users and played every game (Ghost Recon and Call of Duty) with no problems whatsoever.

hmm. does gottadeal still do those 750 off coupon things for the new dells? I was in your position last year as I was entering college and I used a $750 one on a configured 600m which came up around $2000 so I bought it for around 1250. I'm content with it. although I'm none too thrilled with dell's poor design of airflow. eh, with my proc undervolted it runs cool so I guess I should stop rambling.

Are you only able to install Windows on the MacBook Pro?

Linux & opendarwin can also be installed. BSD drivers are not yet available but would be available in the near future.

Any Intel-based Mac will be able to run Windows via Bootcamp or Parallels. This includes the MacBook, iMac, and Mac Mini.
