A student in a difficult curriculum does not typically have a social life during the semester. A social life is for LAS majors.

Although, the social interaction with fellow students concerning class becomes the social life. Studying together in a group for motivation and brief camaraderie helps.

Sometimes, a little time can be found for lunch, dinner, tea, or coffee. A few minutes with friends between hours of studying becomes valuable.

Very carefully. Social life can be many different things. Engineering students aren't going to be spending the time in bars that english lit and music majors are. A lot of your tough math and science majors socialize together via study groups and the like. Contrary to popular belief the point of college is to get an education, not party. Having less of a social life and graduating with a good GPA in a useful degree will have you smiling for years after those that partied their way through school with a mediocre GPA in a useless major. You'll be making good money while they are struggling to pay their loans making $10/hr wondering what the hell they did.

How does one have social life when there is a lot of homework

You should go to college to study/for education....not to party/chase women and do drugs/get drunk.

I understand that 99.999% will disagree....but it's the truth.

Don't do homework; cram for midterms, cram for finals, write papers the day before they're due like a boss.

worked for me, YMMV

not mutually exclusive

LOL what? Do NOT listen to this advice. I went to a private university that had a top-5 engineering program, and I had plenty of engineering friends who were able to have a normal social life and went out regularly on the weekends (and sometimes during the week). I can't imagine spending 4 years studying and "sometimes" going out for coffee. That's ridiculous and drives people to insanity (as well as to being socially awkward).

+1

really just depends how smart/talented the individual is. Some people need to put in more work than others.

Nothing is good when taken to extreme.

It's all about balance. I would give very little to "social" aspect of it and more towards education.

Socialize with other students during the day. Eventually you will be motivated to make time for them and do something. Also, even if it seems like your work load demands it, I have to recommend against constant studying. Take a break. At least 5 minutes every hour, and a couple times a day for about 30 minutes. Trust me when I tell you the brain just stops absorbing after a while.

Meh, I did civil engineering and still had time to blow 6 hours a day on weekends on games... Lots of times it turned into 10 on Saturday, then I finally did some last minute work. Pulled at least one all-nighter per semester. Probably would have done better if I kept up with classes rather than showing up, sleeping, and/or just coping notes, but not actually listening.

Corrected that in grad school and came out with an A+ average. Yippi-ki-yay.

I subscribed to this thought when I was getting my EE bachelors. It seemed like most of the smart people were the same. It was pretty typically to eat with friends a few times a week, maybe spend Saturday afternoon socializing. Other than that, it was studying all the time. The people who socialized "normally" were the C students or the ones who dropped EE for an easier major.

I'm now working and getting a masters degree on the side. It's been pretty tough working 40+ hours a week and then 20-30 hours on school. At the beginning of last semester I was 2/3 of the way through the program and I had made all As, so I figured I could put in less effort and make some Bs. Last semester, I put in about half the effort I normally would have, produced lower quality work, and still made an A.

It makes me wonder if I've been working too hard this whole time. I always tried to do my best, which takes a lot of time. I can spend half the time, do a decent job, and still make an A. Gah!

You have to pick between passing, or socializing. Unless you're one of those people who skip every single class, not read a single thing, show up to the exam and ace it. I hate people like that. Meanwhile everyone else is struggling trying to do good and studying their asses off.

When I was in college I did not have much of a life, especially the 3rd year. The first two were not as bad, and we played lot of Ultima Online, Pool, and Jackass (card game). Fun times. The last semester was brutal. It's not that it was hard, it's just that there was so much stuff to do and everything was due at once. While I miss the social aspect, I'm glad it's over. Life is so much easier now. Go to work, do my job, go home, do whatever I want.

Mostly because college is easy. I graduated with a 3.5 gpa in Computer Engineering, so its not like I was taking 'easy' classes or failing any. Once you figure out how to study and do homework, you will have plenty of free time. I went out every Friday and Saturday night all through college, and plenty of times throughout the week. Honestly, make an effort to be social early on, having a broad base of friends will pay off in the end. You can always retake a class, but the friendships and the social aspect of college is totally irreplaceable.

Anyone that tells you that you must pick between class or socializing didn't do it right.

I graduated in May, and it pains me deeply that I will not be returning to school.

It's not a matter of how easy it is, it's a matter of how much work there is. In comp sci I had multiple huge projects in every class, they were easy, but they still consumed lot of time. Some nights I'd be up till 2am just trying to catch up on all the homework. The ones who socialized did so way past midnight, and barely slept.

One of my classmates actually failed, since he kept postponing one of the bigger projects, instead of working on it after studying till 3am, he'd play WoW. Straight A's person too... except for that one class.

Oh I'm not saying you will have tons of free time, I'm saying that its possible to do all of the work and still have time to socialize. I usually worked on whatever was due (with the exception of projects) the night before, projects I usually spent all day Sunday doing. This left me with Friday and Saturday (and occasional Thursdays) to party.

You also need to remember you are only in classes for like 15 hours a week, that leaves plenty of time during the day to work on homework/projects and study.

Don't stay in your dorm room all day!

If you game, play multiplayer. 8 player Mario Kart Double Dash will build you up a sizable list of allies and enemies.
