College Major Question...

I am beginning my second semester at my lovely college (University of Central Florida) and I am currently majoring in Information Technology. I am teetering on the edge of CS or IT. I want to do something in networking, but I'm afraid that when I get out in four years, IT will be dead and I am left jobless. Programming really isn't my bag, I love hands on things and that's why I chose IT instead of CS. Any comments on this? I just don't want to get a useless degree.

If you love hands on stuff, you might want to give electrical and computer engineering a chance. There's still a bit of a market left for that.

I also recommend computer engineering. It is definitely harder than IT, but at the same time you will have a more unique skill.

So what degrees still have a good percentage of employment? Or is all the talk here about not finding a job overblown?

That's what I majored in. Though I still don't have a job yet, after graduating in May (though it took my cousin 9 months to find a job when he graduated in the early 90s in Civil Engineering, so I haven't given up hope). But I can tell you that the market is flooded with IT majors. We had over 200 IT graduates this year, as opposed to 52 in CE. And it was a low year for IT, and a very large class for us.

Most of what the IT majors learn at my school was essentially useless a year after they graduate, and almost all of it could be learned from product manuals. Big waste of money for the schooling.

And some thought that PCI network cards were hot-swappable.

I too WAS wondering about the same thing a while back. I choose a Information Systems Management over CS, because that is what i RATHER be doing. As long as you enjoy what you are doing and u know your stuff, i don't think finding a job will be that hard. But then again i am just a college student. I am gonna be a junior in the coming fall, so i should be starting on some internships soon. i went through the same thing you are going through myself, i even posted about it like you did, but most people here tend to bash IT quite a bit.

edit.. IF i was given a chance to start my college career over, i probably would of studied to become a pharmicist(sp).
