First of all, I am about to shoot my brains out over this college thing. I have applied to two schools at the moment. One is a public pharmacy school, which I probably won't get into and the other one is an engineering college. I know both a very different types of schools but I am having doubts about pursuing a degree in an engineering field. So I am trying to rule out my decisions if indeed I don't get accepted into a 6 year pharmD program. I am thinking about physical therapy. What are some other good professions I can look into?

Are you just beginning college? Have not started or finished undergraduate? If so you can still go to pharm school.

Engineering (mechanical) and physical therapy are not all that unrelated if you think about, so you might want to reconsider. Or you could merge those interests somewhat and major in biomedical engineering.

Business and economics are useful majors that can lead into a vriety of interesting careers.

The hard sciences (chemistry, biology, math) are not of much use in the workforce unless you plan to get a graduate degree of some sort. But if you go to grad school, you can go into any number of interesting fields. One option with an undergrad science degree is patent law (what I do), though it is getting harder and harder to break into the field. Not to mention that being a lawyer is not all its cracked up to be (spend a few days with a lawyer to make sure you will enjoy the work before you decide that you want to enter the law)

Pharmacy is an interesting field, and there is more than one way to get in. If you don;t get into a 6 year program, go to a four year college, major in a science/pre-pharm program, and then go to pharmacy school afterwards. You might spend a bit more time in school, but you shouldn't rule out pharmacy if it what you want to do and the only problem is that you didn't get into a 6 year program.

Then I don't know what you are worrying about. Complete your undergraduate along with the requirements for pharmacy school, and go. You don't have to go straight there after high school.

Medical school and dental school should be fun, try that. Or be an actuary for insurance companies.

Dental school is the way to go if you want to make a ton of dough. Every dentist I know makes over six figures and works three days a week.

Yeah I think I am considering that now. Although it would take me 2 more years, a total of 8 years to get a pharmD degree.

Biomedical engineering sounds interesting.

My wife is a physical therapist. She enjoys it and the job pays well. She says it can be a bit strenuous on the body at times, because you are physically assisting patients in their therapy.

It was ranked as the 6th or 7th best job in America by CNN Money recently.

Well in biomedical engineering (at my university), there are concentrations that you can choose from that primarily utilize other major engineering disciplines. The three concentrations offered here are bioinstrumentation (electrical engineering), biomechanics (mechanical engineering), and biomaterials (material science). So depending on what engineering field interests you the most, you can decide on what concentration to pursue. You don't really start your concentration specific classes until your sophomore/junior year, so you have time to test the waters and see what fits you. Either way, you're applying engineering concepts to biology/medical applications, which is why I wanted to be biomedical engineer.
