I'm trying to decide... Poll is do/did you live on campus or off?

I'm planning on having a job. I'm trying to decide if I want to get an apartment/housemates or if I want to live on campus (dorms? on campus apartments?)

Edit: Oops... forgot to say that I'm a transfer student from a community college, and i used to go to Rutgers and lived on campus. I'm only going to be there 2 years.

Live on campus for atleast your first year. Most of my college friends I met in the dorm my freshman year.

My school requires on campus for atleast 3 years. Not that big of a deal and it makes everything really conveninent since at my school things are really close together

I lived off campus my first year. Yet my college apartment was only 5 minutes away from campus, plus I had no desire to be tied down in the crappy dorms.

I did 4.5 years on campus at GT, albeit 2.5 years in the West Side Apartments. No regrets. I lived in downtown Atlanta, lived on campus where the sports action took place, didn't have to pay extra for high-speed Internet or cable TV, etc.

For undergrad at UCLA, I was off campus as soon as possible. I always lived within a 45 minute walk/15 minute bus ride from school, so socializing was never a problem. Now at UCSD, graduate housing on campus is highly subsidized and cheaper than almost anywhere else in the city. Too bad there's a 2.5 year waiting list.

I'm a transfer student from a local community college. I did attend university for 1 year previously -- dropped out, and lived on campus.

Soon I will have lived on campus for 2 years. No more. I've had enough of living with other people, I want somewhere where I can live alone. My first semester was in a dorm. After that I was able to move to apartments with upperclassmen. There are still loud parties here, but it is generally less noisy, and the immediate region is less saturated with the particle that science has yet to define: the Moron. It's not a boson, but it definitely exists. At any rate, there are fewer of them in the apartments.
If I had to live in the dorms another semester, I probably would have dropped out by now. I hated that place. Soccer matches in the halls, wrestling matches upstairs, idiots throwing up drunk in the hallways, jerks would run up and down the hallways at night and just pound on every door, random fire alarms, and a complete lack of anywhere I could go to just be away from people. I was confined to a place where I couldn't get away from my stressors, they were always nearby. I had been robbed of a quiet "safe" place to go.
I had always been a sound sleeper, able to sleep through fire alarms. Now I am waken up by the warm air hitting my feet from the heater. The relay clicking in my UPS will wake me up. One week, I woke up at 4am for 4 days straight for no reason.

Next year I will be moving off campus. I won't care much for the fact that I'll have to drive every day, but it should be a short distance of less than 5 miles. I really do look forward to finally having my own place. I've had enough of the social living thing. I guess I am glad I did spend time on campus: It'll give me perspective when I'm scraping a foot of snow from my car at 7:25am. "This is snow, it is temporary. It will be done with soon. Loud irritating people are persistent, and remain so well above the freezing point of water."

So, if you're sociable and "normal" in that respect, then campus living should be fine for you. If you are acclimated to being alone, it may take some adjustment, assuming you ever do adjust.

Yep. Also it will be easier to get to class because you won't have to worry about parking and all that mess.

as most people said.. i lived on campus for the first year (awesome experience), then off campus for 3 years (even more awesome experience, but only more awesome b/c I lived on campus the first year).. I wouldn't want to live off campus right off the bat if i were to do it all over again. in fact i wouldnt change a thing

Off campus. Way, way cheaper than a dorm room. When I lived on campus my dorm room was $650/month -- off campus, I'm paying less than $300/month in rent (split with my bf). Even with utilities it's much cheaper.

I am currently a freshmen living offcampus.
i can tell you first hand it s has its perks. all of my freinds live in this tiny 1 bed room with a roommate and pay for 2 semesters as much as i pay for an entire year. i live alone is a nice large apartment. my "study area" alone is larger than their rooms.

however i pay for this luxury by living 20 minutes away. the keyword above is ALONE. it gets really really lonely living all by yourself. it much harder for me to make friends as well. and i can't attend many of the campus events due to living far away.i don't have a car either so i have to be home by 11 or else i am stuck ther over night. i can't attend any of the events that happen late on campus. i have to schedule my time instead of being able to just go places on a whim.

in short i love my apartment. i won't leave it now that i am here. but if i had to do it again i'd probably go far on-campus or at least an apartment really close to campus.

Same here, and on campus is soooo much better in terms of convenience and social life.
