So I just found out that all the orientation programs at my college are full and I should just contact my academic advisor to set up an advising appointment. Am I gonna miss out on something important? I'm asking because it wouldve costed $225 if I went.

It was a decent time.

Met a couple of people I'm still friends with 2 years later. Got familiarized with the campus and it helped with the advising being done during orientation. Also got wasted with the Orientation Advisors and a bunch of people.

Orientation here was free and mandatory. Met my current GF there, and made an impression on one of my profs in the process. Overall, not a bad day.

Prior to that, there had been another free and mandatory session where we'd gone over all the normal advising and scheduling crap, gotten IDs taken, etc. Orientation was basically an icebreaker where they took everyone and split them up by major.

I liked orientation. Parties galore, and I got to run around campus doing nothing.

But yeah, I'd say it'd have no negative impact on your academic career if you didn't go.

Your *TUITION* is 44k? That's insane. Are you sure that's not their estimate of all expenses?

Edit: my school has 1 week of orientation (free), and 1 week before that of "pre-orientation" (pay). The pre-orientation programs are supposed to be pretty cool accoding to the people that have done. Last year there was one that went scuba diving in the carribean. So it really depends on what your school's programs entail.

I guess it depends on how large your college is. If it's huge and a generalized orientation then I'll say it's a waste of time -- most of the people you meet you're not even going to bump into again. Smaller colleges or orientations for specific majors is a different story.

Orientation at UCF is a load of crap. It's two 12 hour days of doing a whole lot of nothing. The first day you take a 30 minute tour of campus, then they throw you into buildings and spend hours telling you generic info about degrees you probably aren't interested in anyway.

After that, it's a couple hours in a ballroom watching people put on skits about college life and rape...then a few more hours of blur.

The second day is the only one that's partially useful, which is when you get your student ID and register for classes...but those two things only take up about an hour of the day.

Thank god they apply what you pay for orientation towards your tuition for the upcoming semester.
