Its possible but I still call shenanigans.
If its a 30 year load and around 8% interest I believe that's about 60k worth of debt add in some bank fees and that figure becomes very possible.

heh borrowing money to someone who might not even finish school or might decide to take a useless degree and go flip burgers is a risky proposition, they gotta be high.

Yeah except that in most cases the loan is guaranteed by the federal government and the bank risk is zero. I'm sure they tell themselves the same story when they make up those numbers, though.

I'm dismayed by the number of people in this thread who apparently think it is ok for young people to need to assume 10 years worth of debt in order to get a college education. We're on the fast track to third world country status.

It's not that's it's "ok" or "not ok", it's that it's doable. You gotta take care of yourself, and if you get the right degree and go get a job the debt burden isn't an issue.

As a society you can say it's too much or whatever, but you can't wait for society to change.

I'm with you. There needs to be a free or low cost option.

I'm guessing she got a degree in sociology or something similar, because it sure would be embarrassing if she got a finance-type degree.

She borrowed $26,000 but will owe $77,000? Jesus Christ, what kind of interest is that? My loans were/are NOTHING like that. What, did she pay a payment of $10 a month or some stupid shit?

I don't disagree, and obviously she mismanaged her debt, but as a Dad who is looking at around $200k to put my youngest through four years of school (or offloading a large amount of that onto her as liabilities) I think the system is utterly fucked. When Second Assistant Associate Deans of Student Kerfluffle make $500k and live in an institution-owned mansion while middle class kids have to take on the equivalent of a mortgage as a welcome to their 20's, things are definitely screwed.

I do not remember anyone put a gun on her head and demanded her to sign the loan(s).

Now she is whining and bitching about HER OWN decision?

<<<--- scholarship, student loans, part time jobs, grants

I do agree that schools (HS, college) need to do a better job and explain to students about the true cost of college loans.

The biggest problem is that spending is out of control at colleges and they are being way too easy on kids who choose stupid majors or ones where they would never be able to make enough to pay it back.

Two years community college and two years of state university. Live at home if at all possible. That would solve much the student loan problem. And yes, there are those going for medical degrees, etc... I know loans for such a degree are going to be huge, but so will the earnings.

No I'm actually paying mine on a 10 year term. And I can do math and figure out if my payments even cover the interest.

It sums up the reality that people can spend 4 years and college and still come out completely ignorant of how the world it.

This. They shoulda just paid their semester of tuition with a part time summer job like good ol baby boomers did and not go into debt in the first place!
I'm definitely not defending her but baby boomers economy was easier for the middle class. They didn't have the crazy high cost of living like we do now. You could support a family on a warehouse or manufacturing job back then. You definitely can't do that today.

all her sign tells me is that she's an idiot.

Fools are quickly parted with their money. This fool let it go at a slow drip.

Not really. In the end the taxpayers will be picking up the tab. Maybe that's what she wants to take place?

or you could suggest that she do a few things different...

apply for scholarships
go to state school
go to community colleges for 2 years

basically, it's only 200k because you let it be.

Yes, a first class college education that will put you right up there in competitive standing is actually only $6.95, but most of us are just too dumb to figure it out!

Forget the first class part, it really doesn't matter.

That's true for some majors, but not for the sciences, which is where she has her sights set.

make her study for the SAT or ACT all summer! if she can get in the 99th percentile she might be eligible for scholarships.

when i was applying for college, case western was giving full tuition for a 35/36 on ACT and half tuition for 33/34. i had 35 so was debating going there, but went somewhere else because case's room/board and fees were still pretty high. but not nearly as bad as the tuition.
