They aren't your friend, they are there to deliver your food...that's the tip.

If you want a friend or more seek therapy.

In cattle car places, you need to hail your server for a refill.

Don't be so pompous, Mr. Scotch.

Yeah, they are there to deliver your food - that's their WAGE. The tip is extra if the customer so chooses. It isn't for anything more than the whim of the customer to further compensate the server.

Bullshit, again. They deliver the food for the wage they are paid by the restaurant. The service that you get, above and beyond, determines the tip. You can change the base according to the establishment you are in, but the metric remains the same.

I also don't know why you keep associating scotch with high class. A bottle of Macallan 12 is not that expensive.

lol I guess many of you guys forget what tip means.

I will not tip someone just for dropping food on my table. They either earn their tip or get nothing. If they need a higher paying job they can go get one. They make minimum wage no matter what so I'm not going to reward someone by giving them money for doing everything that is in their job description. Earn it or don't.

Sorry if you're on a shared tip system. You did state that anyone who did not leave couple dollars was a "cheap prick." The fact is, if I choose to leave .01 of a dollar, it's because my server was a lazy douche who deserves to be paid $.01, and I'm sure as hell not going to leave them a few dollars for their horrible service just so they can tip out . Be angry at them, not me.

Im not on a shared tip system anymore, don't work in a restaurant. I was just trying to say that all of the tip doesn't just go to the server. Sometimes the server pays a percentage of their tips to the busser. And another thing, some servers do more than just take your order and bring it to you. Alot of restaurants the servers pre bus tables and do clean up after you leave, and if there arent bussers then the servers clean up your mess. Sometimes the service includes more than just the server taking an order and bringing it to you. I agree with you that they're alot of lazy servers that don't deserve a tip but I know that after I leave there could be somebody that does work hard and has to clean up the mess. Put yourself in their shoes and you might have a different perspective.

Do you tip the janitor after you use the public bathroom? Do you tip the person at Old Navy cus you didn't put the pants back perfectly? Do you tip the people at McDonalds? They all clean up after you. Put yourself in their shoes.

They get paid an hourly wage. not all servers or bussers get an hourly wage, they get paid through their tips, thats the difference.

They're doing what's in their job description. I tip based on them going beyond that. Simple as that.

So they get no hourly wage? From the federal law all servers must make st least minimum wage no matter what. Seems like you might need to brush up on the laws.

we covered this in this thread already. works great on paper, but many waitstaff would never survive on minimum wage nor should be expected too.

And we've covered this in the other thread as well. If they don't like the pay they can get another job. Millions of other people work minimum wage jobs just fine.

you get what you pay for, don't expect to get good service or work if you want to pay people the bare minimum.

Which is a sad way to look at it. I expect people to put 100% into their jobs. ESPECIALLY if they want tips. If they want a tip they better work for it. Expecting to be tipped just for cleaning up or dropping off a plate is stupid.

I agree. You should give it 110%, especially if you work for tips. But, sometimes shit happens and you get too many tables because somebody calls in sick or the restaurant is just short staffed and everything you got isn't good enough to satisfy everybody. A certain amount of that comes down to the way the restaurant is run.

Believe it or not, I side with the restaurant owners.
Gratuity signs were clearly posted.

Go in groups of 4 separately. After you gotten inside and food gets served, join your tables together.
Let that be a lesson to them.

In my opinion, tipping poorly for poor service is much more effective at sending a message than not tipping. When you don't tip, you come off as a cheap bastard. When you tip a ridiculously small amount it sends the message that you felt they did a crappy job serving you.

I've actually had a bar manager confront me about that one time. I paid cash for my bill, and left the coinage I received as change as a tip... less than 50 cents. I was stopped by a friend on my way out and chatted for a few minutes when the manager came up and asked if there was a problem with the service. I told her the beer had too much head, the waitress had her finger in it when she delivered them, put her hands all over our utensils after handling money at another table and while my burger was hot, the onion rings were cold and soggy. She apologized and quickly scribbled "1 free meal + 1 free drink" on the back of her card, signed it and handed it to me.

this place is teh screwed....

i realize that "the pub is right" because it's printed in the menu. that's no excuse for poor service though.... and to have them arrested? In an already hurting economy, customer service and loyalty is the only way you are going to stay in business..... good luck to this place in the comming months. i'm sure this will eventually blow over, but how much was that $18 tip worth?

Where I come from we don't tip - it's always funny hearing stories from friends who have been to the USA and have been oblivious or not fully aware of this social custom. Tipping is a good way to encourage good service, but why would you tip for poor service?

The service comes first, then the money, then the tip (if there is one).
Its not like these kids were going in every night and giving shitty tips and getting a reputation for being bad tippers.

Having worked as a manager and as a server this topic really pisses me off (the way it's presented on this site).

Not because most of you are blowing shit out of your ass or riffing on Reservoir Dogs. I could care less about that.

It's because four or five years from now some waitress is going to bust her ass for an annoying group of people and get stiffed because a pimply, fat 14 year old kid lurked this thread and thought it was "cool". He'll convince his pathetic friends that tipping is not required; hell say he "read it somewhere".

Stay classy.
