Nope. University of Washington uses a seven-digit number.
From what i understand, its derived from your ssn.

Also, look at your student id... the black strip on teh back of teh card is just cosmetic. the real magnetic part is a 3cm wide x 2cm tall chunk inside the card. look for it right under the hologram type thing. if your card is worn down, you can see it easily.
(this is regarding UW id's)

no, it's not. the first part is the year you enrolled, the second part comes from the order in which enrollments are processed.

and uh... what hologram thing? or did they come out with new cards....

employee ids used BE your SSN until state law changed. that is why we now have different numbers for EID.

Hrm, i was told that the first 2 digits are when you enrolled and teh rest is a derivation from other things including your ssn. Maybe i'm misinformed.
And its not a hologram, but it looks sort of like one... shiny seal of the UW.

The school I go to EVERYTHING and I mean everything is based off of your SS#. It's on your transcript and the like papers (well, of course), all your grade papers, student id card -- the whole nine yards.

Until a couple years ago, there was a flaw in the placement system. They used to just take your SS# down when you took the placement test. Anyone could have easily taken the test for a friend so they could be placed into a great class. They now require a photo id which is long overdue if you ask me.

Our cards used too (at RIT), up until two or three years ago (some still have the old cards). Now the just have the last four digits (which also comprise the end of our institute - issued email addresses).

And every office you talk to has a different way of asking for the SSN. One asks for your "social", one asks for your "id #", one asks for your "student id #", etc.

Nope... RPI uses its own 9-digit ID# for students on ID cards and for some exams and stuff. I guess they used to use the SSN up until a couple years ago or so... I think this past freshman class was like the second class to use the 'tute-issued ID numbers for students.

@ Ohio State our Student ID is more or less a Debit Card..... we use it to purchase stuff... we use it to prove we are college students to get college admission.... but thats about it. We either have our SS# that we tell like the head offices for information if they are trying to track us or we have a user name and password to access our own online information/email

At Clemson University, it was. Until this year. They made new I.D. cards for everyone on campus in February and March that had either an 8-digit or 9-digit I.D. number on it that wasn't your Social Security Number. I guess I'm glad to see that, although it never really bothered me since I don't lose things like my wallet and never leave it laying around for people to find.

when someone steals your identity lets see if you're still saying that
And what are the odds of that happening?

We have online class registration, where you log in w/ your SSN and use the last 6 digits as your password by default. If you had someone's ID, you could go into the school's library and add/drop all his classes and look at his/her transcripts....that would suck.

If you request it, they LEGALLY have to give you a new ID with a different number. I did that when I broke my ID in two to save $20. I'm a genius!

It's about the principal of keeping my personal information private.

I think there was 900,000 cases last year and is consider the fastest growing white collar crime. One of my closest friends was a victim of identity theft.

Cornell had them on the card as well as a separate student ID number until last year (I think), when they issued new cards with only the student ID numbers on them.

Yes, my SSN is on my ID card, and on a ton of papers, tests, and projects I've turned in too.
