grrrrrrr - I have been purposed this question on the student forum and look at some of the responses I have been getting:

who cares... people like you that worry about everything are crazy... if you keep your card in your wallet, you're fine... the lunch lady doesn't look at it long enough to get your number... it's just the same as having your social security card in your wallet, and lets be real, college kids don't have much credit available to them, so why would someone want to steal our identities????

Why worry? Someone can just as easily take your name off of here and go find out your social security number so I mean dont stress so bad.

yeah i would say you're being pretty paranoid... most lunch ladies aren't out to steal your identity... I think I'll worry about the food first...

it's the easiest way to keep track of everyone

Why am I the only one who thinks this is a REAL issue?

For those of you worried about the security of those college ID cards read the article about it in volume 19 number 1 of 2600 magazine.

yakko any links?

grr look at this post someone sent me from the student forum:

you're still crazy..haha... damn man nobody is gonna steal a college kid's identity, and if they do, there are routes and procedures to get these things taken care of... you're showing your ignorance on the subject by caring about it so much if you don't like it, leave it at home, or keep it in a safe place.. it ain't that hard, quit bitching about it... just admit that it's not that big of a deal... make sure you wear your anthrax mask tommorow and that bulletproof vest, and carry that radar equipment w/you to check for planes off course, be careful not to get struck by lightning, and please, whatever you do, don't let anyone get your ecu one card please, i'd hate for someone to steal your identity, and uh, let us know about any suicide bombers on campus ok??? thanks man, i appreciate it

With as many posts on here as there are worried about credit it's amazing someone would be so unworried about having their credit DESTROYED. If you are the vitcim of Identify theft your credit will be ruined for 10 years.

2600 is the frequency in hertz (cycles per second) that AT&T formerly put as a steady signal on any long-distance telephone line that was not currently in use. Prior to widespread use of out-of-band signaling, AT&T used in-band signaling, meaning that signals about telephone connections were transmitted on the same line as the voice conversations. Since no signal at all on a line could indicate a pause in a voice conversation, some other way was needed for the phone company to know when a line was free for use. So AT&T put a steady 2600 hertz signal on all free lines. Knowing this, certain people developed a way to use a whistle or other device to generate a 2600 hertz tone on a line that was already in use, making it possible to call anywhere in the world on the line without anyone being charged. Cracking the phone system became a hobby for some in the mostly under-20 set who came to be known as phreaks.

Oh about CC:
in the 1960s, a breakfast cereal named Captain Crunch included a free premium: a small whistle that generated a 2600 hertz signal. By dialing a number and then blowing the whistle, you could fool the phone company into thinking the line was not being used while, in fact, you were now free to make a call to any destination in the world.
